Homeworld: Emergence was originally released as "Homeworld: Cataclysm". "Cataclysm" is now a registered trademark of Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., and the game has been renamed to avoid confusion. Other than the subtitle change, the game is identical to the game released in 2000.

15 years ago, we were awakened from the cryo-trays. We had survived the journey to Hiigara, our lost homeworld. Then they told us that the planet we left behind had been destroyed. Our families... friends... everyone not on the mothership - killed. Destroyed by an enemy we never knew.

We realized there was nothing for us on Hiigara. No property, no rights, no future for the "Sleepers". So we returned to the stars, fully awake this time, to work and rebuild our lives.

It is ironic, then, that we are the ones to discover an alien capable of exterminating all life in the galaxy. And only we are in a position to destroy it.

Fifteen years after returning to their homeworld, a Hiigaran sect unwittingly releases an alien horror. Now it's up to you to commandeer the Kuun-Lan, a Hiigaran mining vessel, and transform it into a combat-ready mothership. Build and control a fleet of ships, research technologies, and harvest resources while you search for a way to eradicate the alien threat before it is too late.

Excellent Game -- outdated nGlide

Cataclysm is my favorite of the Homeworld series. Emergence changes nothing from the original aside from the title screen and the name of the shortcut. Even the .exe is still named "cataclysm". That said, the nGlide wrapper that comes attached with this is VERY outdated. If you have issues with the game window being off-centered, try grabbing a new nGlide version from "https://www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide". You'll also want to delete the original nGlide files from the game's install folder. These include: 3Dfx (folder) rDfxSpl.dll rDfxSpl2.dll rDfxSpl3.dll glide.dll glide2x.dll glide3x.dll nglide_config.exe nglide_readme.txt nGlideEULA.txt After installing an updated nGlide, and deleting these files from your game folder, you may want to run the updated nGlide Configurator (should be a link in the start menu) and switch "Aspect Ratio" to "Aspect correction". After doing this, I can finally run the game in any resolution I want (using the registry tweaks discussed elsewhere) and the game is centered and properly letterboxed. Onto the game review itself... I find both the story and the voice acting compelling. I really like the aesthetics of the ship designs. It's subtle, but the controls are quite a bit more comfortable than hw1. The game mechanics are superb, best in the series IMO. Every ship occupies a very interesting niche in your arsenal. Limited fleet capacity and generous resources in the SP campaign means missions have their difficulty fine-tuned to the fleet you can muster, rather than on your success in earlier missions. At medium difficulty, most missions can be completed with a variety of different fleet designs, while still providing a challenge. The missions themselves are interesting and diverse. No two missions feel "samey". Time compression is a great solution to post-mission gathering, and for slow parts of certain missions. I love this game. I'm overjoyed it's back on the market. I'm playing it all over again, and you should too!

Works perfect without Glide

I played this game and completed it in 2000, I even have the original box next to the original Homeworld. The game is not so difficult as the original standard Homeworld, however now 20 years later I need some practice to learn to be faster with all the commands in 3D space. This RTS is still worth to play, it's also still beautiful, even in 1280x1024 ! The soundeffects, the many pilot voices (cheers of victory and cries of fear included), the very good soundtrack, it has it all. If you liked the other Homeworlds, remastered or original, get this masterpiece now! Ps delete all the files 3Dfx (folder) rDfxSpl.dll rDfxSpl2.dll rDfxSpl3.dll glide.dll glide2x.dll glide3x.dll nglide_config.exe Start the game and check the opengl, NOT glide ! Have fun !

Barking Dog's tour de force

Barking Dog grasped HW1 better than Relic did. Unlike HW2, this game is engaging and fun. The story: A mining Kiith unwittingly unleashes an ancient, self-conscious virus that infects ships across the galaxy. It is then up to your faction to git gud at war and dispatch this threat. You transform your Kiith of peaceful miners into war veterans possessing great weapons and technology. You must research upgrades for your mining ship in each mission and build modules that expand your SU or allows you to research new technology. In multiplayer, there are skirmish and LAN modes. The soundtrack is haunting and excellent. Chatter is more personal than in HW1. Visually, there are smart improvements, e.g. map backgrounds are pleasing with little lightning effects shooting around, repair bots can be seen attending to capital ships and the infection mechanic is unique. Speaking of which. It allows the Beast Mothership, Carriers and Heavy Cruisers to take possession of some enemy ships. You can also damage enemy super-capital ships with it. The mechanic forces you to make strategic and/or tactical choices related to it. For example, you see a Beast player with a mothership and two carriers, but no other ships. Do you build a large fleet of frigates, risking much of your fleet being lost to infection? Or do you turtle up to a Siege Cannon? Do you forego frigates altogether and go for an early Destroyer instead? There are a notable engine upgrades. Ships can be upgraded and may be given orders in the Sensors Manager, there is time compression, slipgates link specific points in space and can be used to quickly travel great distances, crystals can be harvested to obtain RU - but can also be blown up to destroy enemy ships. The continuity of the HW universe is handled very well. The Taiidani Empire/separatists, the Turanic Raiders and the Bentusi all feature in the game, but are not its focus. I can recommend trying the smart and ambitious Onslaught mod.

Ahh the memories...

Played many hours of this prior it coming to GoG and I actually have the original which I've managed to get working on my superior modern day rig. I simply purchased this on GoG because ....well why not? Future support for a game that was thought lost and now it has a home, I really do think the devs deserve our support for bringing back what trully are "Good old games". The game itself, hasn't aged a bit, as good as I remember it and though I have to play this through again, I know for a fact that the story itself is trully epic! What stood out to me most from the original Homeworld for some silly reason was the pilot view, I know, it's a little gimmick but I loved being able to zoom in on pilot view of a ramming frigate while I was making my attack run. Only thing I have yet to suss out is the resolution, the game always seems to crash when I try and alter it. Even if you're not a fan of Homeworld but love strategy games, buy this classic and then buy the other Homeworld games. Only one thing you have to release now GoG and my gaming history will be complete...you know what that is.....FREELANCER!

Much less than I remember

I have very fond memories of Cata-... I mean Emergence from back in the day, on an old Celeron PC at about 400 mhz or so. Many memories of a fantastic but difficult campaign, storyline like no other space RTS I had seen up to that point, it even surpassed the original Homeworld in my eyes. This version does not. I don't know what changed, I don't know what was altered, but the gameplay is not the same as Cataclysm was. Many things seem in error that are just simply frustrating. If you don't tell your command ship to stop attacking and wait for it to finish turning in a direction, for example, it keeps spinning at whatever velocity it was, forever, until you tell it to stop. Strike craft groups told to target multiple targets will break off halfway to one, to go after another that is the opposite direction. Multiplayer AI seems to think it's a good idea to always attack the human player, even when its option to do so is not. As well, they seem to also think it's a good idea to park their command ships within sensor range of yours. Seven other players that close to you is simply not fun. These things did not happen before, in the CD version I still have. Let's hope your Siege Cannon doesn't also have the same luck mine keeps having where it detonates INSIDE THE GUN'S BARREL, which kills your entire fleet, your command ship, and the match. I'm trying desperately to enjoy this but it seems to be an exercise in vast frustration so far. Even the normally very fun campaign is turning into a chore due to suddenly VERY bad ally and self-ship AI maneuvers. Nothing in the game seems to quite work the way it 'used to', and I HATE saying that about a classic game like this. I sincerely hope your luck is better.
