Despite the many flaws - 5/5
Many flaws but in the end they are all quite small. As long as you accept that at times you will struggle quite a bit, it'll be fine.

Very similar to the Hollow Knight
It has enough differences for the experience to feel fresh, yet similar.

Epic, but not legendary
TLD;R: Excellent sequel with some odd design choices that are very apparent in the mid-late gameplay loop that can hinder the enjoyment of the title. I'd recommend playing the first and then this one, so you get the hang of the story and can be prepared for the spicy combat! 4/5 THE REVIEW: I will try to remain as objective as possible, but due to human nature I may sometime state things that I did not like, so forgive me. I'll be focusing also on a comparison between the OG and this title for reference where things are better or worse. Lets dive in: THE GOOD: 1) Exploration: Probably the peak and jewel crown of any metrovania I've ever played, funnily enough better than the Metroid series that started the genre when it comes to detail and variety. While the OG pushed you to pry and locate more in lore, items and sights, silksong does that ten folds better- having such an impact that you'll be mesmerized and always want to see more. 2) NPCs & quests: While non-existent in the OG, here you are actually quite involved in a massive quest system that both gives you upgrades and sometimes new bits of lore or information or a challenging boss fight. Even the NPCs have interesting interactions that shed light on Pharloom and help you progress; at later stages some join you or assist you in some instances. I don't think there was any NPC that did not, except a hidden one, had no small impact on your progression or relative story telling- the OG had no such interactions to this extent. This also shows you that Hornet (the protagonist) is more active and engaged, while also showing emotions and care unlike in the OG (of course this was intended in both games respectively, but a fun thing to see nonetheless !). 3) Bosses: This is a mixed bag that I will shed light later on, but I must say that almost every boss was fun and challenging even if you almost lost your sanity. The best ones were at the end of act 2, the true ending and a hidden location I won't spoil. Probably the best boss designs I've had the pleasure to encounter in a metrovania, but they did not peak the OG's final true boss and other secondary bosses when it comes to the game's own conclusion and presentation- it did not deliver the "oh crap, this is so sick" factor, but that is subjective. I would say that the true ending was worth it though, and gave you a nice close on the saga of Hollow Knight (although I theorize that Hollow Knight 3, if there will ever be another title, might be focused on our new friend from the true ending). THE BAD: 1) Bosses, rewards and back-tracking: Many people complained about this and I must say this is sometimes true and sometimes false. Some secondary bosses do not give you any worth while rewards while others are mandatory for some critical upgrades (masks, spools, etc). The main issue is persistent in some boss arena designs and the back tracking. One notable mention most will agree on is the end boss of bile water, which has 3 waves of enemies and a long backtrack that confront you before the boss fight can even begin. Another is in the late game where once again, you fight 3 waves of enemies just to reach the boss fight even if the boss itself is really well designed (note that this happens when you are technically engaging the boss itself in its arena, this is in Far Fields- its karmalita I'm talking about). The same can be said about White-ward and Sand of Karak (although the latter is not as horrible as far-fields). Most other bosses are excellent, I just hope Team Cherry will provide a solution to these problems or remove some waves in upcoming patches because this is just a frustrating arena design, not a problematic boss fight. CONCLUSION: This game is an epic adventure that really fits the title of sequel with a hard curve of difficulty (I really recommend you play the first game, because this will be confusing story wise and agonizing in difficulty for newer players in my opinion, but to each his own). However, some obscure arena designs really can frustrate you in the mid-late game which turns the pacing off a bit. The OG was legendary and will remain the unconquered metrovania champion for now, but Silksong is an excellent sister title that should also be played if you love the genre (note that I expect more patches that hopefully might address said issues, so I'll update this review if it will be so).
