King of the TBS hill. It rarely gets better, if at all, though it's not without its flaws. Some of those flaws are alleviated through mods (Horn of the Abyss would be my recommendation). Other design "flaws" that persist are essentially features you'll just have to deal with--no game is literally perfect. Age of Wonders is the only series that comes close to surpassing this, imo. The newly released Songs of Conquest is also a worthy contender. None can quite muster the strength to overcome the master, however. Not even this game's sequels. There's a reason this game is still played my many, decades after its release, and consistently holds a spot on GOG's bestseller listing.

I've been coming back to HOMM3 every year and enjoying the game. With an amazing modding community, you can keep playing forever. There are new stuff coming up and planned for the game even today, and just with the existing mods and campaigns you have many thousands of hours of gameplay left with this game. If I were to take a single game with me on a desert island, even though my favourite game is probably Baldur's Gate 2, this would easily be my choice (with Dwarf Fortress a close second). 4.8/5 is too low for this.

I have a Dell Windows 7 64 bit, 6 G RAM bought Nov. 2010. I downloaded GOG's Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete today and installed it as instructed. It plays great. No glitches, clean install, game graphics look great, great sound, the game runs smoothly -- and no CD disk or copy protection needed to run. Thanks.
