Lets just say I bought this on steam and got 100% of all achievements, then I was sad because I knew there was content missing, low and behold GOG has the full game with the expansions. Buy THIS one not the one on steam, you are getting the short stick on Steam. There are so many players still playing this that you can get a MP game going if you want to, but really I love this game for the single player campaign and the skirmish you can set up. A great strategy/rpg game on a tactical map. For the price its worth it at full price, but if it goes on sale and you where iffy just buy it. if this game is on sale its a steal.

I have been playing this game almost 25 years. I can't stop playing it. I have played homm 1, 2, 4 and 5 too and they are good too, but this is the best without diference. And now, there is an app in android (VCMI) that allows you to play it in the tablet (or mobile if you have good eyes XD) You still need the original game to play in android (this version for GOG, noy the steam one) I'm not tolking about piraty. What to say about the game... Various factions with a lot of different creatures with diferent abbilities. A lot of spells. This forms an infinite possibilities of strategies to win. There is various campaings and an absurd quantity of scenarios. You have a map editor to create new scenarios and a automatic creation option, so you always will have new maps to play. And there is a big community that creates new campaings and even new factions... Last year they create a new one (factory). I said it before: BEST GAME IN THE WORLD

Tldr: A great game, with beautiful graphics and nice game play, flaws in the AI are annoying but the campaigns and better solo maps make up for this. Hot seat is a fun way to spend an evening with a couple of friends (especially if there arn't enough computers). A great game making many improvement upon HOMM2, I fully recommend this game. It is a turn based strategy game where you control castles to gain, then upgrade units. Controlling various mines and other outposts provide benefits ranging from resource income to boosts for heroes. Heroes are used to control armies, and while they don't take part in combat directly, they influence it by casting spells and modifying combat bonuses. My one problem with HOMM in general is the AI, the AI tends to be poor and higher difficulties only provide boosts to resource income for the computer. This results in either overall easily beatable opponents, or very tough early to mid game fights but towards the later middle stages of a game it just becomes repetitive slaughter. However, the campaigns and better solo maps tend to regulate gameplay or add in interesting enough diversion to distract from this. (pet peeve: The humans who have always tended to be the weaker race (and required more tactics and numbers) have been slightly overpowered with the addition of the Angels.)

This is very much a game of my past, having played it as I was growing up and then lost it while I went through the motions of high school, university, career etc. It's absolutely a game that has stood the test of time and is just as enjoyable now as it was when I first discovered it however. Nothing about the game has really aged, its distinctive graphical style transitioned gently into 'retro' without being jarring, the sound is as good as any and I still regularly listen to heroes orchestra (check them out if you haven't), its story as immersive and fun as it was on the first play through and its replayability is just as good all these years later. Its cheap, fun, immersive, will play or just about anything - I cant recommend it enough if you like turn based strategy.

I've been coming back to HOMM3 every year and enjoying the game. With an amazing modding community, you can keep playing forever. There are new stuff coming up and planned for the game even today, and just with the existing mods and campaigns you have many thousands of hours of gameplay left with this game. If I were to take a single game with me on a desert island, even though my favourite game is probably Baldur's Gate 2, this would easily be my choice (with Dwarf Fortress a close second). 4.8/5 is too low for this.
