This is a superb game. well balanced, challenging, lots of fun, and many, many hours of play time, for a very cheap price. Works flawlessly on my XP system, not a glitch or crash in, so far, 50 hours playing time.
I recently downloaded 10 or so games from GOG, old favourites from the past, but this is the one I have been playing. It stands the test of time, and is a testament that great gameplay far outweighs pretty graphical effects.
Buy it, really. You cant go wrong.
Heroes III is one of those games that you never can get tired of it. I remember playing the original Restoration of Erathia 15 years ago, taking the tutorial and get pissed off one time after another, until I got a bit in deep into the game and learned the mechanics. Since then I’m still hooked and have to replay it one time and another along the years.
Combats are like an awesome chess-playing where every unit counts, even the smallest, counts. There is no place for just brute force, you have to be smart and in every battle you learn something useful for the next.
The complete version is a ton of hours of fun. Their campaigns (Shadow of Death is absolutely brilliant and the best part of game I think) are awesome. The system to level up your heroes, secondary skills, completely different type of towns with completely different kind of strategies to use, makes this game infinite. You can create a hero might-focused with all pure combat skills – artillery, archery, offense, armorer…, or you can create a powerful magic hero, with all the magic academies and all spells, intelligence, sorcery… It’s your choice and is amazing to level up a hero trough the entire campaign. And even learn some powerful spells like Town Portal, Dimension door or Fly, those completely break the game as no enemy could resist that.
With the HD mod you could enjoy the game in actual PC’s. I’m playing in a 12” Intel Atom, 1GB of RAM, with an Intel integrated graphics card, Win7 32bits and is awesome. The mod also fixes some bugs and has minor but useful tweaks like recruit all the creatures of the town with one click.
There is also an awesome multiplayer (I’ve never played as I’m a big noob) and a mod like Hota, that adds a new campaign, new heores even a new town (Pirates)…
Buy It, it completely worth every single penny on it.
I will keep this short, I love this game and like to play it today (2015-11) and I loved to play it back in the nineties. It is what I would call a timeless classic. It is still as much fun as it used to be.
You don't need to dedicate yourself to playing this game, it's fun for 15 minutes, and it's fun for 6 hours straight. You can leave and come back later with no problems getting in to it again.
I have played other Heroes titles and this is by far the best one to me. Also Heroes 1 and 2 is fun, but the later installements in the series didn't quite catch my liking - unsure why that is.
I like games like Civilizations, The Settlers 2, Imperialism, Age of Empires, Ceasar 1-2-3, Knights and Merchants and various simulation and RTS games. I have also played alot of RPG's etc but i don't think that is relevant to the genre. If you like any of the games listed above you are likely to LOVE this game.
I grew up in the 70's and have been an avid gamer since the Atari 2600. HOMM3 is a true masterpiece that stands up even today. One of the first things I want to mention, that seems overlooked in many of the reviews is the music. The musical themes and scores written for this game were composed by a literal music genius. Look him up. All too often, we gloss over the little things that make truly great games, like the music. The music in HOMM3 is unmatched. The game itself is addicting and endlessly replayable even today. I own hundreds of modern games, and this is still in the top 20.
