I really enjoy the fact that it doesn't require GOG or any game platform to be able to play online, they have their own multiplayer service even if it seems a bit clunky sometimes, it works most of the time.
I enjoy the weapon leveling and upgrade system. Each weapon has its own EXP bar that grows when you use it and you have to upgrade one of each weapon enhancer and can swap them as much as you want with the dedicated crafting terminals.
It would benefit so much from content updates, I have no idea if they plan to release any.
In any case, I managed to acheive one ending and I'm currently playing on new game + mode. See you in-game !
My review is based on the gift version GOG offered to me.
Others have said it all, but beyond the great look of the thing, it's no fun to play.
Not enough info in-game to tell you which weapon or armor piece you should be using or what this other junk is that adds to encumbrance and can't be discarded. Timing jumps is more difficult than it should be, combat is slow and clunky, bosses can't be survived and once encountered can't be avoided.
Every time you die, a "ghost" is added which is a predatory superhuman version of yourself. But because you lost all your "axions" or leveling skill points when you died, you have no hope of defeating your ghost, and have now spawned a second one, and a third one, ad infinitum, and these will seek you out wherever you are, preventing progress through the map. And speaking of a map, it would be nice if there were one in game, because you'll just keep wandering around the same level in circles as the mobs keep respawning around you.
There is only autosave at vaguely defined spots in the game, but even when the saving animated icon appears, it's not really saving your progress. The only "saves" that are saved are made when you die. If you decide to start a new game instead, you have to go through the rigamarole of creating a new character and sitting through the slow, monotonous, unskippable cinematic prologue, which is in a language I don't recognize with English subtitles.
There is no comprehensible story. Ducking for cover could put you in an inescapable instant death trap. Boring, frustrating. Any game where death in unavoidable that also gimps you every time you die is sadistic and misguided.
The real enemy is your own ghost that remains after you die, and quickly learns moves your character is not even capable of.
This is in stark contrast with most enemies that you soon learn how to kill in two hits.
And every time you die you have to restart and fight all the same enemies again in the same order.
To begin with, I hate soulslike games. Or at least I was. Untill this game. Hellpoint is not a game of your or anyone's dream, it looks preety, but a bit cheap, it has addictive gameplay, but also has plenty of bugs. BUT! It worked for me. Hellpoint is a first suols like game that I realy liked. It has acceptable difficulty (challenging, but not enraging), interesting lore, and, what's most important for me - dark, occult atmosphere. Sometimes it was as viscous and tense as in Dead space (and that's a horror game, by the way).
All in all, it's not the best game in the world, but it's totaly worth of your time. You should give it a chance, even if you hate soulslike.
This is closest to Dark Souls 1 in terms of gameplay. There's no fancy movements and ranged/magic seemed very limited. It also has those "I don't know what I just did moments" like joining covenants etc.
I had fun for a 4-5 hours until after missing a bonfire I had to go about 1 whole hour stressfully picking fights hoping to find the next checkpoint and not lose my souls. After I finally found a bonfire I went and fought a boss which for some reason had a lot more hp than any before and about 15 minutes into the fight he hit me during my roll and the game refused any further commands of mine. It was quite funny watching the boss proceed to miss me for about 20 seconds despite me not being able to move. This was the second time this had happened so I just gave up.
I think it's a cool game but without the hype of a good community like most Souls games have it's not as easy to keep pushing. I similarly never finished the original Demon's Souls.
