Nice Game
Nice game, not earth shatteringly deep or very long, but very atmospheric. The combat has a little bit of tactics with the combos, but its easy to figure out. The fights feel a bit like Final Fantasy (you get a sound effect at the start of a battle, you go into battle mode and the position of both units if fixed until they act), except that you have one unit, the choice you have in battle is which combo to use and when to block (which will require getting used to the pattern of each opponent), timing is everything and there are combos that consist of simple button sequences (a bit like Street Fighter, but a lot more forgiving). I think the idea for the combat system is interesting, though I feel it is not exploited to its full potential here (maybe it will be in a sequel or expansion). However, the game is short enough that the combat system didn't overstay its welcome. For me, the best part of the game was the story though. I think the graphics, sound and story mesh well to create an engaging atmosphere. I wouldn't quite call it horror (maybe halfway there), though there is a bit of Lovecraftian influence thrown in there and the setting is bleak. The mythos the game weaves is quite interesting. If you're a Gothic horror fan, you'll likely dig it. The characterization doesn't go too deep, though the characters are serviceable. Overall, the characters are there to serve the story. So, play the game for the story and atmosphere. Like me, you might also find the combat system intriguing (especially if you played Final Fantasy and some fighting games like Street Fighter and enjoyed both), though at this point it is superficial enough that you'll be glad the game doesn't last too long. Overall, the game is nice, short, probably won't blow you away, but its pleasant and will probably leave you wanting the game creator to continue the story in an expan/sequel and hopefully keep tinkering with the combat system to make it deeper.
