Fantastic Metroidvania for Everyone
Long story short, I haven't been invested and enjoyed playing a metroidvania this much since Cave Story +. The setting and the mechanics steal the show here. The graphical style, the characters, the humour are all spot-on. The game is charming, funny and serious at the same time, and it is a pleasure to look at. I had some members of my family look at it and go "are you playing a cartoon or something?" (I remember enjoying the graphics this much when I played the first Shank.) Moreover, the story stays with you and sinks in after a little time. There are characters that I will definitely remember for a long time (I am looking at you Steve...I mean, Poncho.) Gameplay mechanics-wise, the game also delivers. Aside from the standard metroidvania properties, Guacamelee also features a brawling system that is easy to learn but hard to master. I don't agree with a review here that says the combat is frustrating. Yes, there are times when the enemies fill the screen, and you have to pay attention to the shields, but I solved everything by just calming down, and paying more attention to the challenges. I could go on and on about the small details that makes Guacamelee one of the games I enjoyed the most during my entire gaming life. Did I mention the alternate ending? Or the side quests, the secrets, and so on? I end this review with a wholehearted recommendation for everyone. Easily worth the price they are asking for it, and I can't wait what Drinkbox will deliver us next.
