In the digital adaptation of Isaac Childres’ ultimate strategic board game (6 Golden Geek awards, “Board Game of the Year” in 2017), developed by Flaming Fowl Studios, you play as a Guildmaster taking control of a squad of 2-4 mercenaries each with a huge selection of unique abilities.

The region is in strife, the wilderness has become overrun with Bandits, Demons, Undead or worse and people are afraid to leave the safety of their towns. Trade has come to a halt, and the world needs re-connecting.
As a Guildmaster, you see an opportunity to make a lot of money by reopening trade routes across the lands while everyone else is too afraid to do it.
Bring your fellow mercenaries along for shared challenges with the online multiplayer cooperative mode, up to four players.

Online Functionality Requires Galaxy

I own the Gloomhaven boardgame and enjoy it a fair bit. When this version was released, I was excited that I'd now be able to play the game with my friends around the world. I got the game in late December, 2021, and it worked well enough (though there are issues with the UI, and a few other problems; 8urnsky's review matches my experiences, though I'm less critical about the problems and would rate the game between 3-4 stars if not for the online issue). However, some recent patches have now removed the ability to play online if you do not have Galaxy installed. I don't use Galaxy for the same reasons many other people don't and, if Gloomhaven's store page had said it required Galaxy to play online, I would not have bought the game. As of October 8, 2022, the store page still does not say that Galaxy is required to play the game online. I am extremely frustrated that the game I purchased can no longer be used online: playing online was the only reason I bought it! This review is intended to be a warning for others who don't use Galaxy -- if you want to play the game online, you can't -- and as a plea to the developers to either fix this issue or return my money. I already own the boardgame; if this game doesn't have online play, I don't need it.

Multiplayer doesn't work

I purchased this game specifically for a multiplayer session with some friends. Before the day, I downloaded it, installed it, made sure it ran, and played through the tutorial to familiarise myself with the controls. I double-checked that the game description on GOG said that it was compatible for cross-play with the Steam version. I was being careful, or so I thought, to ensure that I wouldn't hold people up by not being ready to join the server. Then, on the day, I opened the multiplayer menu to join the server ... and the "join game" button was greyed out. No explanation, no mouseover hint as to why this might be the case. For completeness, I went through the convoluted process of hosting a game - going through a painful tutorial on starting a game, making my friends wait all the while, to reach the point where I had an active game that I could turn into a multiplayer session ... only to find out that option was disabled, too. I purchased this game to do one thing - join a multiplayer session - and it wouldn't let me do it, and wouldn't even give any indication why.

Disappointing

This game must rock with a group of friends around a table, but honestly it is designed to be played that way, the PC version is simply disapointing and becomes boring very fast. Also optimization is rock bottom, loading screens take plenty time which doesn't exactly add to the experience and you need a pretty good PC to high in the specs settings, it is really baffling how many UNITY games eat resources only to offer a subpar experience.

Puzzle game, with RPG elements

I'm not really sure why I've played this as long as I have. I'm a completionist and I just want to get to the end so I can stop. It's basically a challenging puzzle card game - and a good one. Each turn you have to try to figure out how to cause maximum damage with the abilities available to you. But that's it. There is no crafting. The loot system is awful. Every enemy carries the same amount of gold, and you can't pick it up unless you end the turn in the same hex as the gold. No enemies carry items, you only get one per mission as a reward if you're lucky. Really? The RPGs I played on my Amiga 25 years ago had better loot systems. Every mission is basically the same. There isn't much variation in enemies. The maps are small and unimaginative. Please make it stop?

One of the best board game adaptations

I now have over 200 hours in this game and going strong. I will admit this type of strategy game isn't for everyone, but I absolutely love it. There are so many different characters in the game and they all feel solid and different. That's one of the main things I like about it. There isn't a single one that I thought was terrible or useless. Some of them are a bit weird to play, but once you get used to them, weird is good! Now a bit of a warning and caveat. This game can be difficult at low level... which is sadly how you start out of course. You need to get a level or two and some good items before your characters get going. Having played a massive amount, I can do fine starting off, but I could really see how someone who had never played it before could have a rough start. My advice to you is to only play 2 characters and keep at it until they are at least level 3 and have a few potions and items. Once you get into the swing of it, you'll move to 3 characters and then 4 and never look back. There is a LOT of content in this game. If it turns out to be the type of thing you like... you can easily sink hundreds of hours into it.
