Really cool but glitchy

The game is accessible, if dated. The missions are hard enough to be challenging, but are winnable even for a new player within a few tries. This is a fun game! The downside: The controls are wonky, failing to make adequate use of the mouse. Make sure you study the controls on the main screen, since you can't access them while in a mission. Sometimes missions spring surprises on you that cause you to fail the mission, as you could not have anticipated them. Likewise, sometimes the game glitches, and the non-player ships fail to take a required action. This can cause you to fail through no fault of your own. This is the chief flaw in the game.

One of the greatest space fighters

I remember playing this game about a week after it came out and I was hooked. Where the story in Wing Commander got a bit weak after #3, the story here was actually pretty good. The graphics were top notch and still don't look bad even today. The dogfighting was fast and furious. One of the great parts of this game is that winning/losing a missing has consequences rather than just "you lose" or "next mission in line". An all around intense game, a very fun game and a must-have for space sim armchair pilots. And you cannot miss Freespace 2 either...

Freespace Review

Freespace is a classic space title. An epic struggle between the GTA against the unknown Shivans. Freespace is a well designed game that is extremely fun to play. Just as good today as when it was first released.

Nostalgic

I think it was my mom who got a computer through her job many years ago, and this was one of the games that followed. Being a fan of games such as Battlezone and earlier star wars spaceship games I thought cool, a space game but I remember not expecting much. I was ofcourse oblivious to the greatness of this game. Everything (was)is great about it, especially the story. I think this was the first game I played where you could actually get "achievements" or medals as they are ingame. I tried to play every mission pixelperfect just to get every medal back then and I still do today :) I'm just thrilled that a site such as GOG exists and brought me this game again on Vista.

Freespace

Not quite as impressive visuals as it sequel (obviously), but still a fantastic space flight sim. Very easy to get into. The best franchise of this genre out to date . If you are a fan of wing commander style games then you must own both this and the sequel, which is even better. The add on pack is very hard even on the easiest settings, hence a slightly lower score.
