The year is 2367, thirty two years after the Great War. Or at least what YOU thought was the Great War. The seemingly endless tide of Shivan capital ships, bombers and fighters with super advanced technology was nearly overwhelming.
As the Terran and Vasudan races finish rebuilding their decimated societies, a disturbance lurks in the not-so-far reaches of the Gamma Draconis system.
Your nemesis has arrived... and they are wondering what happened to their scouting party...

Pretty much mirroring everyone comments plus if you get Freespace Open (FSO) the game fixes a lot of bugs, lagging issues, and brings the graphics up to a somewhat modern look and feel! Definitely worth the $6! :D
One of the best games I ever played. Seriously. Space sims are not my favorite genre but FS1 and especially FS2 are the remarkable exceptions. It is highly narrative. It's very atmospheric. It shows stunning graphics (and if you use Freespace SCP's graphics improvements then it even gets ahead of the majority of modern space sims). And the player never gets bored thanks to a diversity of mission objectives and battle situations. And again it's one of the most narrative action games though it doesn't even have any in-game characters. But the story is very sophisticated and it constantly keeps player in anxiety.
I was blessed to have a dad who bought the big box copy back when it was released. To this day nothing comes close to how sensational this game is. The music, effects, story, graphics and everything else is absolutely fantastic.
One reccomendation is that anymore who buys this checks out the Freespace 2 Open project as to this day they are improving the game engine and mission editor and after playing with the mods the game looks like it has been made this year.
Cannot rate this game highly enough.
Brilliant game, might actually force me into buying a joystick!
It's a shame that I played the X Series before this though, I would've seen it for what it truly is!
This game is incredible! Gameplay is fantastic and the storyline is top notch! You must play this game! Actually, because the story is a continuation from Freespace: The Great War, play that first. Then play this game!
Also, be sure to check out the graphical enhancements freely available with the FS_Open mod and all of the great fan built campaigns. Go to www.hard-light.net and use the installer package they provide. It will give you fantastic graphical updates and dozens of hours worth of quality campaigns.
