Worth it just for the custom characters
I haven't finished the campaign, but I have spent a lot of time playing with custom characters in the extremely fun skirmish mode (''Danger Room''). The settings allowed me to make mostly accurate copies of the Hulk, Wolverine, the Punisher, and Superman, the most difficult part being the search for skins.

Cool concept, bad AI makes it a failure
A love letter to the corny, almost campy comics from the 60's, set in the Cold War era, Freedom Force is a really cool concept that needs a modern remake; sadly I can't recommend it -the heroes in your squad are just too content to let themselves get beaten to death without complaint, without hitting back nor trying to flee. At first I tried playing in easy, then in very easy, but as soon as one of your heroes is ganged up and you blink, he's toast. If you really insist in playing, you can "pause" the game in super slow motion; that way you could play it micromanaging every single hero because is the only way you stand a chance at not being butchered in place. This might have been playable as a turn-based game but let's face it -comics action has to be real time. Lesser complaints: the manual has spoilers in the first content page, object-throwing is a bit too unwieldly to be useful, the ease with which your heroes die when ganged up makes you keep you squad close together so you can get an eye on them, but their powers are so different they just can't fight together. I really wanted to like this game but the only way I think I could manage to keep going (I almost ended the first arc) is by playing perpetually in super slow motion, micromanaging every single hero, playing in very easy (I managed to beat the early missions in normal, but then had to switch to easy, by the end tried switching to very easy but didn't help). I really wanted to like this game, but the bad AI and overpowered henchmen make your squad a massacre waiting to happen. I was curious to see the story through so I didn't mind playing in very easy, but still it's a hard chore trying to win and that's not fun anymore. Visually it has aged well, good (and very corny) voice acting, really cool concept and atmosphere (whoever did it knew their comics), ran flawlessly in hi-res, but overly fragile heroes and overpowered henchmen turn a four-star comic book dream game into a one-star disappointment.
