About the game
They took your freedom. It's time to take it back!
Freedom Fighters is an intense third-person action game set in an alternate history New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. Take on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber, and rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove yourself as a charismatic leader.
Liberate supplies, scavenge weapons and use the 'recruit and command' system to grow the resistance and lead up to 12 freedom fighters into strategic conflicts throughout the campaign. Travel across the city and complete interconnected missions where your actions in one level affect the battles in another.
Originally released in 2003, IO Interactive's cult classic is now available digitally in its original form for the first time.
About the soundtrack
The Freedom Fighters Soundtrack features 18 tracks that are produced by acclaimed music composer Jesper Kyd. Combining live choir performances by the Hungarian Radio Choir with techno beats and other electronic instruments, Kyd effortlessly captures the vibe of the game and the epic quest to liberate New York from a foreign superpower.

Is great to be able to play this gem of a game again, had many of hours of gameplay on ps2, sound is crisp gameplay is fluid on modern system, if you missed it 17years ago give it ago you will not be let down on the fun you will have
made my 2020 a little bit better thankyou GOG :)
Freedom Fighters is a mix of a tactical shooter and 3rd person action bonanza. It is neither great in any of those two areas but the combination of those two, weirdly works pretty well. The tactical aspect is very, very simplistic in away that you have only three commands (defense - offense or regroup) but the game encourages you to go flank the enemy. And there are good spots to do that if you're willing to explore the area before going in guns blazing. Nonetheless the limitations, I think it's a good game for people who want to dip their toes into the tactical genre. For those who like more sophisticated tactics in a shooter should go for the Brothers in Arms series (although it's a 1st person shooter).
FF story and voice acting is preposterous. But it comes with the era when video-games weren't being taken seriously. Hackneyed stories and over-the-top voice acting was still the norm back in those days. I kindaiss these kind of games though. Although I have never played this game back then, I have played it for the first time now on GOG. There were a few bugs I encountered, like crashing during a rescue mission early on. Which was resolved through playing in admin mode. There was trouble with the aiming mode on some of the last missions, especially when your standing in front of an object, box or peeking from a wall, the aiming glitched and I had to shoot from the hip for the rest of the mission.
Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it's also very short, I finished it in almost 2 days. I wish there were some custom missions or boss fights, or other playable rebels with different attributes to extend the playtime. I think this game could have benefitted from a sequel where the mechanics could be further developed. Still a recommend from me in sale for the nostalgic gamers or for casual gamers who like their games simple.
An absolute classic!
The United States is invaded by the Soviet Union in an alternate reality timeline. You play Chris, a plumber forced to become a Freedom Fighter hero!
This game is one of the most enjoyable games from the early 2000's. As Chris, your goal is to take back various locations throughout New York from the Communist Soviets. In order to do so, you must undertake daring attacks on heavily guarded Police Stations, Fire Stations, and many other important locations throughout New York.
While you bring bloody hell down on the Red invaders, you will command a growing group of soldiers who support you in your crusade to save the "Big Apple". The squad command mechanics are simple, and fantastic! Sometimes, simple is best. And it is at its best here. Send your soldiers in to attack individual targets, or call them back to take cover near you and defend your position. If one is taken out, run through the gun fire and heal them. Simple, and satisfying!
The story is simple as well, with some great cut scenes, illustrating what it might be like after an occupation of this scale. Soviet propaganda news reports which start by attempting to normalize the invasion as if the Soviets are coming to save us from the "evil capitalist government we have been oppressed by". To the player becoming the boogeyman, the biggest thorn in the side of our occupiers as you build and push your rebellion to unstoppable heights.
This game, is a CLASSIC in every sense of the word. And it is an insult that we never got a proper sequel.
I HIGHLY recommend Freedom Fighters to anyone who loves GREAT games. The Gameplay is simplistic and a total blast, the Soundtrack is one of the best of the era. You will fall in love with this game as many of us did back when it was released, and will come clambering for more.
FREEDOM FIGHTERS is a TRUE CLASSIC, you will not be disappointed!
Very fun story of a regular man turning into a resistance fighter and eventually rising to the leadership. The aiming is a bit clunky but overall the combat is fluid and satisfying.
The ability to choose which missions to do, such as whether hitting the helicopter base or a logistics bridge changes the way you do every mission. If you hit the helicopter base awesome, you no longer have to fear those flying beasts. If you blow up the bridge, you no longer have to deal with the constant flow of reinforcements.
The levels are large, well-designed and immersive, from regular neighborhoods to the military checkpoints and underground bases. Even someone with poor sense of direction like me can find their way in the maps and complete the missions.
It's also one of the few games I remember that you can easily and satisfyingly lead a group of fighters. Pathfinding is really good especially for its time, I don't remember babysitting them often. The more missions you do, the more authority and therefore ability to lead more troops you get.
The ending was also surprisingly poignant, and after all those years I'm still hoping for a sequel.
A well-aged game, strongly recommended.
