Just replay Descent 1 instead

I love 6DoF shooters, so this one has been on my wishlist for the last 25 years or so. Unfortunately, it's a disappointment - IMO it hasn't aged as well as the original Descent, which predated it. The enemies are uninspiring: ugly tanks and tiny NPCs who are trivial to bait from a distance. The weapons are from an unfortunate era in game development, when particle effects were used for everything. They feel toy-like after Descent's legendary loadout. Sound effects are grating and repetitive. Level design is OK - it has the claustrophobia I'd expect from the genre, without being a labyrinth which constantly requires the map. There is a variety of missions and puzzles, which sets it apart from others in the genre. It's a pity the uninspiring shooting makes them a grind. The other standout is the 3D map view, which is one of the clearest of any in the genre. It's hard to get lost here. The remastering is flawless: everything runs smoothly and glitch-free. The low-res textures are a mess on modern hardware - I'd recommend playing with no texture filtering. I dind't play multiplayer; couldn't comment on that. I'd recommend picking this up on special only once you have already played all the Descents + Overload to death.

Reliving my childhood

I used to love this game back when I was really young, or at least I loved watching my dad play it. I was too little to understand how to controle it, so I would always get him to come in and play it so I could watch, and I loved it. Finally being able to get my hands on the game, especially all spruced up and on my computer, is a dream come true to my nostalgic side. The game runs perfectly, and controles smoothe as heck. I highly recommend this title, it holds up as a fun and challenging experience.

Great feel and brilliant version

Forsaken 64 was one of my favourite games when I was a kid, so seeing this available on linux was an instant buy for me. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the port, since I've tried playing forsaken a few different ways with varying results. Thank you all for bring this gem to modern systems in a polished way. Highly recommend.

Reminds me of my teenage years

I had this game on the Nintendo 64, it was a bit different but the same essence, the music brings me lots of memories.

This 6DOF Classic has not been Forsaken

Forsaken is a classic Six-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DOF) shooter in the vein of Descent, but with a few of its own tricks up it's sleeve. Chances are, if you were a console gamer, you remember Forsaken more than you remember Descent... And if you were an N64 gamer, the Forsaken you remember is completely different than the Forsaken that PC and Playstation fans got. This release by Nightdive, though, is easily the definitive version, combining both versions into one massive 30+ level game. As far as "remasters" go, this one is pretty modest - mostly consisting of quality-of-life updates such as high-resolution support, texture filtering, FOV adjustment, ambient occlusion, etc. Frankly, I appreciate the fact that the underlying graphics, polygons, and textures remain untouched - this is truly a great-looking and very colorful game, even in 2018. Gameplay is hard. Really hard. This game will unapologetically tear you to shreds. Newcomers, be informed - there is zero shame in selecting "easy." It's anything but. With some tweaking, I found that playing with a mouse is very comfortable and smooth, and get used to using all of your sliding and banking controls simultaneously, because Forsaken is fast-paced, and sitting still is tantamount to suicide. The decision for most enemies to spawn in means that you can't really pop around corners or funnel your enemies into a choking point - you frequently have to deal with enemies coming from all directions with little other than pure dodging skill to save your hide. Projectile-based gameplay means Forsaken essentially feels like Descent, if Descent were a bullet-hell sh'mup - save-scumming is encouraged. Failure rarely feels cheap, though, and each non-linear, objective-based level feels really gratifying to complete. Very fun, very challenging, tons of content. An absolute must-buy for hardcore 90's FPS fans, especially those familiar with either version of Forsaken, or with Descent.
