excellent top-down space adventure

fixfox is a great adventure game with a much better and longer story than I expected, touching on various themes and subjects, like gene splicing to adapt humans to climate change, robots, and of course food, all presented with great pixel art, varied music and amusing writing. gameplay is fun for the most part, as you explore and fix stuff for robot residents of the planets you crashlanded on, using whatever items available to reach your main goal of getting off the planet (coins work as screwdrivers, toothbrush as a brush, vinegar as acid, etc.). all the robots are available for a chat and to ask for directions and more info on certain things. the day-night cycle is purely cosmetic, save for a handful of quests. having to do everything 4 times during the main story gets tedious after a while (build a thing that consists of 4 parts, they have to be retrieved from 4 places each, then there's another 4-part thing, etc.), but if you mix it up with side-activities (or just take a break sometimes) it won't be an issue. it's very hand-holdy for the most part, but if you don't pay attention, you might get stuck for a bit. the world is mostly open and there's a lot of quality of life and attention to detail. there's a map, various ways to fast travel, certain mechanics to reduce tedium during repetitive enough puzzles, etc. it's retro done right, without sacrificing functionality because 'you didn't have x or y in the 90s either'. manual saving anytime over multiple slots, regular autosaves, rebindable controls (defaults work just fine), text display options, volume settings, resolution options, windowed mode. despite some annoyances (the map randomizing every now and then, only leaving discovered main locations, the annoying sidekick's monster warnings about non-existant monsters), it's a really fun 12-hour adventure that just keeps on going and going every time you think it's gonna be over.

A lovely, laid-back, peaceful time

FixFox is a lovely game with an uplifting message in which you're given the task of helping yourself by helping others. It's intensely non-violent, if that makes sense – you spend most of your time doing good things for nice people, and occasionally helping people (maybe even yourself) come to terms with past errors. The gameplay is gentle, involving some exploration (or a lot of exploration if you enjoy it), some conversation, and some simple puzzle-solving. The pace is entirely up to you – push through the main quest line as fast as you can, or take time out to potter from town to town, take in the surroundings, and do odd jobs for random citizens. My main reservation is that the game is extremely easy, and very hand-holdy on top of it. Some of the hand-holding can be avoided – for instance, activating an item will mark on your map the location where it is to be used; if you don't activate the thing, you must rely on your own exploration and observations to find the place. The bulk of the game also becomes rather repetitive, and you can see yet another "do four things" mission coming from miles away. On the other hand, the low difficulty is a bonus in a way, as I've been able to recommend it to non-gamer friends in the knowledge that they won't get frustrated. It also means you can progress steadily through the game without losing track of the storyline, which is by far the most important part of it. The feeling of repetition can be eased at any time by simply taking a break and pottering around until you're ready to return to the main game. The end... and other end... and other, other end... is surprising, satisfying, and moving. I'm glad I played it all the way through, and parts of it will stick with me. I'll also add that the developer is lovely. I contacted him on Facebook about a problem that nearly stopped me cold, and he responded quickly, helpfully, and with good humour. Thank you!

Wholesome and relaxing sci-fi story

The Earth's climate is shot, so everyone's furries now! Indeed, that's how the game's exposition starts. Once that's out of the way, you are introduced to the game's core mechanic, the fixing minigame. It's a simple point-and-click affair, perhaps a bit childish. If you don't know what do do with something, there are always very direct hints. That said, the fact that new mechanics are introduced regularly keeps this fresh. Once you land on the planet, and your tools are confiscated, you meet the very human robots that you will be interacting with for most of the game. You will be fixing their machines, their villages, their relationships, their lives, and each step of this will get you closer to your own goal. In general, the story is generally low threat and just a bit emotional, but you will certainly get invested. Overall the game is quite fun and relaxing, if a bit repetitive. (There are quite a few things that you do four times) Neither the puzzles or the (very occasional) action is particularly difficult, but they both support and pace the story nicely. However, there are some mechanics that don't feel quite as well thought-out as they could have been. The worst is the world scramble, happening between most chapters, which doesn't seem to achieve much of anything other than a bit of annoyance. There are two camps trying to confiscate your things, but there are two ways of keeping each at bay. It all makes sense with the story, but again, it feels like both takes away just a bit too much of the player's time and attention. There are also two whole ways of fast travel, plus a chaotic network of shortcuts. That said, these are all pretty minor annoyances in the grand scheme of things. Over all, I would recommend this game!

Kindness in gameplay and story

The gameplay is pretty gentle and not time sensitive (no deadlines or timed missions), so there's no need to rush in exploring the world and interacting + helping the inhabitants of the planet you're on. Some early challenges do mean some extra planning / management but nothing too difficult to handle. The story is also generally positive, touching on the values of kindness + generosity + cooperation multiple times. Maybe some features seemed a bit underutilised? E.g. there aren't that many opportunities to eat meals; kind of expected a wider repertoire of food to try and perhaps some recipes to discover, or even make some dishes ourselves to offer to others in order to progress Only ran into one bug that temporarily rendered a mission impossible (a critical item mysteriously disappeared, but reappeared after going away and coming back to the area) A shame the story pretty much doesn't leave room for a sequel... would be neat to see the same game universe expanded to multiple planets, I think

Charm, Warmth and Quirkiness

The game is lovely. The text animation and Portraits are very expressive, and the whole vibe is futuristic wholesome. I interface flows effortlessly after a few minutes. Looking forward to exploring this world
