Such a great game, played at launch and about to double dip here for DRM goodness.
Totally worth it.
The story is great, the intrigue and choices are fascinating to play through, very much looking forward to having another go.
Realistic and down to earth chearacters, with relatable struggles. Very engaging story.
As for the gameplay, I suggest you turn off waypoints and just use the map and compass to really feel like you're exploring the woods.
I'm only 20minutes into this game and it's already got to me. The emotions it has evoked and the depth is brilliant. I desperately want to know what happens next. The walking narrative, the choices - all are heart felt and the options I choose are highly influenced by my personal wishes. What would I do? Perhaps not what the protagonist would have done. I'm not the game designer so how could I know?
In equal measures, I don't want to know "what happens next". I think I already have some good ideas but dread them coming to pass. Reality is, I will continue this but already feel my heart in my mouth, dreading what I fear comes next but too involved to not take the next step, answer the next option, follow the narrative.
I rarely ever review games, not feeling I can add more to the brilliant reviews already submitted. Perhaps that says more than all my drivel. Emotional, stunning, fulfilling, visually beautiful. Well worth a look.
If you have played "The Long Dark", You will love Firewatch.
The game textures and art is similar. However Firewatch is more detailed, more organic.
Firewatch stirs emotional adventures and excitement.
It does so with the narative and great music and art choice.
Story wise this game has a very unique and natural story, it is very relatable to the human mind and soul.
I would really love to see more from the developer. A longer story. Similar art style. Same great views.
I do not care if they use the same map, I just want a longer story with the same game formula. It is addictive and fun and much too short. The endings could carry more impact. A hollywood ending would have not been bad. Thou regardless of sad or happy ending. Choosing one with a deep impact would have made this game more notable.
Unfortunately like all good things, they eventually end. And this game ends much too soon. But I loved it.
I found this game to be much more enjoyable than I anticipated. I didn't know much about it going in. I didn't expect the story that I ended up experiencing. Maybe the lack of expectation helped.
Dialog choices is the main mechanic of the game, plus some exploration. The dialog was very well written, and the voice acting is excellent. I really connected with the characters. This is more of a game that you experience rather than play in the traditional sense. I would compare it to a game like Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons in that regard. The game itself is not terribly challenging, but the story and atmosphere really pull you in.
While there is a little bit of walking simulator in the game, the dialog, characters, and story keep things moving. The visual style is also worth mentioning. It is a simple yet visually pleasing game. I can't help but wonder how great this would be in VR, particularly in the free roaming mode.
As for the ending, I felt like it ended on a realistic and satifying note. This game is really about two people isolated from the rest of the world, trying to get away from their lives. The only disappointment that I found was that the game ended before I was ready for it to end.
The regular price is a little bit high for the experience, but if you can get this game on sale then it is absolutely worth it.
I played through the Linux version without any issues on Arch Everything worked great, no issues whatsoever. I love that these smaller/indie developers release Linux versions of their games.
