too much "info noise", unlear mechanics
As with many Slitherine games there's lots of info put into this game, that become rather confusing and unclear to manage in a fun or engaging way. The main problem is how the information you need is presented, in the bars and so on, and how to connect all the information so that you can make good decisions. It feels disjointed, as there is no red line to connect it all. This lack of clarity makes it hard to make good decisions. Should I build a mine or a ranch in this city? I don't really know, and the game gives little to no indication of what a good or even logical choice is. Nor does the game clealy show what the consequences of building X in your city is, how it will impact your resources and so on. Everything just feels very unclear in this game, it's hard to get a good grasp of how to play it well. I contrast all of the above with games like Hegemony, Oriental Empires, and Imperiums Greek Wars, where all the information you need is clearly presented to you, so that you have a good grasp of any given situation. Learning how to play this game is a job; you need to read the manual and watch youtube videos for 10+ hours. I haven't given up on it yet, my enjoyment of it lies at 60-70%, so a 3/5 rating is fair. It does try to do something different and unique, which I can appreciate, this makes it worthwhile to keep trying to grasp the game. Personally though, I think Imperiums Greek Wars is a much better game if you want something similar.
