It starts nice (art style and music), but becomes frustrating.
Pros:
+ nice art style
+ atmospheric music
Cons:
- short (2 hours)
- linear
- unfair passages
- annoying jumping controls
I was kinda intimidated by the other reviews at first.
Yes, Feist is a bit like Limbo (visuals and minimalism). But would you like Limbo, if it had a bit more colors, a faster character and the most intimidating enemies in all of gaming history?
Yeah, not intimidating like "Mhm, we made the model three sizes bigger." or "This enemy makes your red bar shrink really fast." but like "Holy, did this just throw that rock at me- AH, another one! AAAH! It's throwing me all around the level! Take them back!". Would you like to throw a ridiculous amount of stuff at those enemies?
Then Feist is for your.
TL;DR: Beautiful journey through a mystical forest, where for some reason everything is spiky. Short enough to play through in an evening.
Feist is very similar to Limbo. You will instantly recognize Limbo from the game play and graphics style.
The graphics style is gorgeously well done. Everything from the environment to the creepy things trying to kill you fits very well together. That furry thing that you play as is very likable and it makes you feel sad every time you see him/her die. At first that is. Some enemy encounters does not seem balanced which makes you die an awful lot of times before you finally make your way through it.
One place really got to me and it ended in me uninstalling Feist without completing it.
The similarities to Limbo are just superficial.
In the end, it is a mix of 2D walking simulator, rudimentary physics playground and fighting game with next to no puzzles.
Even if you know what you are supposed to do, it is a tedious chore and you can fail (or win) out of sheer (bad) luck. What irks me the most are the unavoidable fights, especially the final boss which is just tedious and not fun at all. Having to face that monster head one without a possibility to really use the environment against him is bad design in this kind of game.
There are long passages where nothing happens to artificially make the game a bit longer and it is still very short. The good things about this game are the graphics, the audio designs, technical stability (judging by the Linux port) and the fact, that you can use any game-pad out of the box without having to deal with modern xinput restrictions.
I'd give it 4/10 if you only pay a few bucks in a sale, not worth full price imho.
1.5/5 5/10 (2/5 if not for analytics)
Be aware the game generates a lot of Unity analytic logs within unity's 'archived' folder and uses the unity analytic dll's:
-Linux version:
UnityEngine.UnityAnalyticsModule.dll
Unity.Analytics.DataPrivacy.dll
Unity.Analytics.StandardEvents.dll
-Wine as above and also:
Unity.Analytics.Tracker.dll
The UnityEngine.Analytics.dll is not there, possibly been hidden within another dll?
You can block the logs from being created in /home/urname/.config/unity3d/play/Feist/Unity/longweirdname/Analytics/archived
Right click the Analytics folder (or chmod it w/e method you prefer) and under permission revoke it so it only has Read access, no Write. You might need admin to change this.
If you already played it b4 doing this, delete the archived folder within the Analytics folder first. It will no longer be able to generate them after this.
You can test this by restarting game with and without Write permission.
Some games generates a LOT of archived logs continously, some only a few.
This game generates a lot.
Regardless of whether anything gets sent out or not, just having something run in the bkground monitoring my playtime and taking up unecesary resources however small and seemingly insignificant, Id rather use that for my games and cross stitching tutorials.
I dont want anything logging what I do in my game whether its my setup, the time I start up the game, where I die or struggle the most on a puzzle, period.
Additionally, since you cant delete or rename the dll's and revoking their write access doesnt prevent it, you can look into blocking the unity hosts to prevent anything going out to be safe. I would recommend doing this.
Note that not all devs is aware of this stuff.
Many have no clue how to even disable analytics! (in ur Unity Services panel last I checked).
This is where the flawed legislations and loopholes come in, b/c this fall on devs to comply, and not unity. And we know that doesnt always happen.
There is a menu option for privacy stuff in this game tho (not meant to work on Linux systems), whether it works on windows I dont know.
But important to note is the difference between what GDPR determine is PII and what is 'not', and that logs are generated and analytic dll's are present here.
If you care you can do as I did, if not play it and enjoy it for what it is!

The game is NOT Limbo.
The only resemblance is the visual style.
Anyone saying otherwise have their head in the gutter.
Its very beautiful, and also a fairly atmospheric with the sounds and music.
I loved the visuals of it!
Its not bad really, but it has some annoying things and is taking unnecessary time in a few places where you will prob redo that section a bunch of times.
And the last boss is not fun, its tedious tbh. I spent maybe 15 tries and wanted to walk away by the end.
Not b/c it was hard as such but b/c you are pretty much forced to clear the stinger mobs on that stretch every time b4 you engage the boss if you want to make it.
You die easy and fast if you dont. Doesnt take long but still.
Not sure what could be changed to make it better, maybe remove those stingers once you have cleared them once, so we dont have to do that each time for best chance of making it.
And its a bit of a random luck and hit and miss thing hitting those orbs at the boss right, half the time b/c I was jumping over and battling the onslaught of loose orbs they landed anywhere else but on the boss :o
This can get you in the end if you dont save those hp fireflies right, and the orbs can kill them too if you're not careful.
Some places had multiple corridors but you are racing from some mobs and they are annoying and no time to stop, and you cant land on the moving box without falling off, or get the rock up b4 you die b/c they headbutt you off and back and forth easily.
So I had no interest in exploring what little you can b/c it was too frustrating with some of these sections.
Its a decent short game tho and if you dont care about these things and analytics give it a try! I did enjoy it for the most part, and its very beautiful.
Just prepare to die a lot.
The keybinds are few and simply and can be remapped (yay big plus) despite what other reviews say. Maybe it has been added since then.
Not worth full price tho imo, half maybe.
