It is false advertising to list this game as DRM free. The DRM is still included in the game and it does not work without third party support. If this had been listed as having DRM still baked into it, I would not have bought it.
If you are the type of gamer that likes to have his "lil walking sim adventure", please head elsewhere. On the other hand if you long for some brutal action and top notch combat, then this is the game for you! It puts gameplay above all else; the true core what defines a game.
The game is situated in the near future. You are an elite soldier of the F.E.A.R.-team, a special squad of troops that are trained to handle the most unusual situations. You are called in to confront a murderous force with paranormal abilities, that is spiralling quickly out of control. A guy named Paxton Fettel has taken command over the prototypes, an army of heavily-armed cloned supersoldiers . Your goal is to eliminate the threat.
To do this you got a number of slightly futuristic weapons at your disposable: dual pistols, a submachine gun, assault rifle, shotgun, plasma rifle, nailgun, rocket launcher, grenades and proximity mines. The guns and explosives all feel and sound amazing! You can lean around corners. You can perform melee combat moves and do scissor kicks while flying through the air. Additionally you have enhanced reflexes. When enabled, time slows down to give you a better edge against your opponents. Opponents that are aggressive, smart and function as a team to nail you down! The A.I. is just phenomenal! The game truly shines if you adopt an aggressive playstyle yourself. That way the firefights become a ballad of death and carnage.
Graphically the game shows it's age but it still looks very clean. You can immediately tell this was fully designed for the pc with no limitations of consoles that had to be considered. You are given a lot of graphics and sound options. You can even play this game with a joystick if you desire! There is quicksaving.
The story is not spelled out on a fridge with brightly colored alphabet magnets. There is lore and story for those who want to uncover it. It is a bunch of jigsaw puzzles that you as a player have to put together yourself.
The gameplay is still top notch, playing just as smoothly as when it first came out. Putting aside the fact that a lot of the game is grey hallways, the high quality textures and effects means that it has aged a lot better than some of the games of the same era.
While Perseus Mandate is lacking in areas, Extraction Point is almost as good as the original F.E.A.R., and both EP and F.E.A.R. make this package well worth the price of admission.
Can an infinitly cool bullet-time effect hold up a game that is otherwise just a string of same-y environments and repetitve enemies with in an inane story and failed attempts at horror?
Mostly
It's considered a classic so I guess you should play it at least once, but I for one was expecting a whole lot more going into thise game.
