For over a century, the world of Aer was a place of peace, joy and prosperity. Through advances in technology and magic, its inhabitants created a harmonious society, rid of disease, destruction and evil. All was well within the land of Aer... Until the Shadowlord came. Once a mere man with a voracious thirst for knowledge and power, the Shadowlord explored where no other dared, forsaking his humanity for absolute control. Summoning forth creatures of evil and attracting the most despicable of men, he created a powerful army and conquered Aer, engulfing it in pain, suffering and death. With the populace kept weak and divided through brutality and fear, few dare to openly challenge his reign. But now, The Council of Five, a leadership of Aer’s wisest rulers and mages, has selected a powerful general to unite its people and challenge the Shadowlord’s rule. With magic, beasts, mortals and mechs at your disposal, you must construct and lead your army across the lands of Aer, defeating the Shadowlord’s forces and generals.. Join the battle and restore peace and happiness to this broken world.
Fantasy General is the third instalment in Strategic Simulations’ Five Star General Series, and invites you to leave the trenches of World War II and enter a world of heroes, swords, magic and beasts. As a turn-based strategy game, you must lead your army into battle with the Shadowlord’s forces and defeat each of his lieutenants across varying terrain and battlefields. Build your army from the ground up, research upgrades to strengthen your forces, and augment your army with items and heroes who will aid you in your plight. With an atmospheric choral soundtrack, a user-friendly, point-and-click interface and engaging strategic gameplay, this contrasting addition to the Five Star General Series will have you hooked from the opening cinematic and will keep you plotting and battling to the very end.

Works on Ubuntu 22.04 + Wine+PlayOnLinux
GOG says this is a single-player game, but hidden amongst the menu options is an "Arena" where 2 players can choose a set gold value and buy whatever armies. I'm so old that I can't remember if I ever finished the single-player campaign, but it's challenging and the battles can be extremely tight. There is a lot of emphasis on levelling up some cheap units from mission to mission. IIRC it was on the side of being too difficult but it's certainly still worth a few dollars. Modern games often forget that what makes a game fun is its core mechanics, and Fantasy General is the quintessential hex-based fantasy.

Panzer General, but with swords
I played the heck out of this game ~20 years ago, it's a great panzer general like tactic game, but with fantasy setting - nothing more has to be said. You have few campaigns, don't remember how much or how much hours of single playthrough gameplay there is, but its worth every penny.

Man I've spent many hours on this game. It's a bit longwinded and requires some stamina, but it's a great army management game.

Hex Game, Civ's Great-Great Grandfather
I booted this up because I got it for free and wanted to see what it was like. It loaded fun, unlike some other 90s games I've tried on this computer, and I honestly found it much easier to understand the controls than I was expecting. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, this game is a precursor to things like the Civilization series, which I play regularly on Steam. This game though, while the controls aren't too difficult, did seem a little wonky in some other ways. The mouse movement moves the map camera so quickly I have to be very careful in order to focus on what I'm trying to see. Also, animations happen so quickly I couldn't actually tell what was going on or what information was supposed to be conveyed. I only did a couple short compaigns, but the game isn't great at telling you what your objective is, and so even though I was winning battles, I lost fairly quickly, and I'm not sure why. Overall though, not as bad as I expected, especially compared to some other things from this era that I've tried.
