Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition

A flawed masterpiece that had alot going against it but rose through the muck to be one fantastic game. Its certainly not perfect and frankly is relatively incomplete due to the short development but by god does it try and have alot of love in it which is something you cant say about many AAA titles out there recently. The people who made this were responsible for Fallout 2 and after having the franchise taken from them by Bethesda couldn't finish their own version of Fallout 3. So once given a chance to make another Fallout they utilized what time they were given to finish what they could and say goodbye to their franchise and they went out with the bang that was Fallout: New Vegas. Bethesda in all their infinite wisdom chose rather than work with Obsidian on a franchise they essentially made that they would shove it over to Todd Howard and his team who could not give less of a crap about what the original Fallouts were about making some incredibly superficial games with little to no substance that has split the fanbase. Essentially this is probably the last Fallout that will be headed by the people who knew and loved what the franchise was, despite all the crap Bethesda gave them when it came to development time, budget, and bonuses along with glitches and various other issues this game had on release it persevered. Resonating with fans enough to fix issues they couldn't Obsidian couldn't fix on their time and create one of the most vast modding communities I've ever seen. If you haven't played it you definitely should.

Without a doubt the greatest Fallout game, even compared to the first two. It's everything Fallout 3 promised to be and then some. This is easily the game I play the most. I've sunk around 1000 hours into this it, and will definitely sink hundreds more. The replayability value of this game is insane. How is it even possible to have a story so good, huge, and malleable all at once? The scale of the plot, map, and mechanics is ridiculous. Games like Fallout 3 make you think that if you want quanitity you have to sacrifice quality, but Obsidian is here to show you otherwise, bringing you one of the greatest and biggest video game plots of all time. There are four different major paths you can take in the game, three of which are basically their own games since you won't have the quests for the other two available once you've picked one. And this is all besides the absolutely RIDICULOUS number of locations, most of which has its own little plot, the handfdul of companions, each of which has its own plot, and the thoroughly excellent and huge DLC, all of which takes place on new maps. The number of weapons and items in general, different solutions to problems, and different enemies and characters is mind boggling. All this is wrapped up in DEEP RPG gameplay that heavily fecilitates actual role playing and a beautiful and thought provoking political plot. Play this game. Then do it again. And again. And again.

To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day Hardly spoke to folks around him, didn't have too much to say No one dared to ask his business, no one dared to make a slip The stranger there among them had a big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was early in the morning when he rode into the town He came riding from the south side, slowly lookin' all around He's an outlaw loose and running came the whisper from each lip And he's here to do some business with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip In this town there lived an outlaw by the name of Texas red Many men had tried to take him and that many men were dead He was vicious and a killer though a youth of twenty four And the notches on his pistol numbered one an nineteen more One and nineteen more Now the stranger started talking made it plain to folks around Was an Arizona ranger wouldn't be too long in town He came here to take an outlaw back alive or maybe dead And he said it didn't matter, he was after Texas Red After Texas Red Wasn't long before the story was relayed to Texas Red But the outlaw didn't worry, men that tried before were dead Twenty men had tried to take him, twenty men had made a slip Twenty one would be the ranger with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip The morning passed so quickly, it was time for them to meet It was twenty past eleven when they walked out in the street Folks were watching from their windows, everybody held their breath They knew this handsome ranger was about to meet his death About to meet his death There was forty feet between them when they stopped to make their play And the swiftness of the ranger is still talked about today Texas Red had not cleared leather, for a bullet fairly ripped And the rangers' aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip Big iron on his hip It was over in a moment and the folks had gathered round There before them lay the body of the outlaw on the ground Oh, he might have gone on living but he made one fatal slip

I view Fallout as essentially being two different franchises. On one hand, you have Interplay's vision of Fallout 1, 2, Tactics, and New Vegas, and on the other hand, you have Bethesda's vision of Fallout 3, Shelter, 4, 76. (Then there's the much maligned Brotherhood of Steel, which is kind of it's own weird, crappy thing!) Obsidian took great care of making New Vegas true to the original spirit of the Fallout Bible design document. I really appreciate that, and it's sad that Bethesda moved so far away from that, because I think it's really a great e-book with a lot of cohesive ideas. This is the best you're going to get for the 3D Fallouts. So, in 2019, I set out to beat this game once and for all. My character was a man named Lucky Dan, and I had a Luck/crit build. This created for a lot of randomized fun in the heat of battle. I also went out of my way to get all the implants and body mods. I was more machine than man! I went for the No Gods No Masters ending, diverting to blow up the annoying Brotherhood, and killing Caesar in his tent. (Hint: Use lots n lots of drugs and Damage Threshold is your friend.) One cool thing about this path was that I got to work with Yes Man who is voiced by Dave Foley of Kids in the Hall in a performance of a lifetime. I also completed several of the DLC, my favorite of which is Old World Blues, which might as well be called Fallout: Adult Swim. The story was a wild ride, and has the best opening in any video game ever, imo. Benny is a great antagonist, and hunting him down keeps the main quest right on track, until he is overshadowed by the looming threat of Caesar's Legion. This game also has my favorite minor NPC ever, No Bark Noonan. One thing that really helped me make it to the end was the YUP patch and the CASM save game manager. I can't recommend this game enough. It's fun, it's reactive, it's interesting, it has amazing character building. Great game. 5/5
