Fallout 2

This is a nostalgic piece of gaming history for me. As such, I may be more forgiving in my critique. In order to avoid that, let me break it down into the simplest elements I can. First, the bad. This game is old. Old school, old graphics, old mechanics, old story telling... but, all of these things together still make a masterpiece today. It's old school. It's post apocalyptic, but it was one of the first franchises to really nail that post apocalyptic feel without making the story stale or repetitive. It's not just zombies after a nuke goes off. It's life, society and survival of the fittest (after the nukes go off). It is old graphics, but the style is unique to fallout and was so fitting to the subject matter that it gave the whole thing a bleak and atmospheric feel that helped to immerse you into the story. Old mechanics were unavoidable in the day because of the limitations of the hardware. The hex based turn based system was easy to abuse once you get far enough into the game, but there was always a "leveller" just around the corner. An encounter that really took thought and skill to get through, either with violence or skills or dialogue. Finally the old story telling. Now this is a thing that I wish games of today would learn again, because it's almost a lost skill. This story takes hours to open up, is always there in the background even when you're off on a tangent and is such a satisfying, well told narrative that it pulls every other element together into one post apocalyptic whole. In conclusion, yes this game has aged and will be hard for newcomers to get into with all of the old school stuff to contend with, but I urge you to persevere, because the experience will be unique and memorable. A classic in every sense of the word.

For Windows 10 just install high resolution patch, go to screen settings, pick 2x scalling. Obviously, graphics are outdated, but atmosphere, lore and quests in this game are superb. And comnat also. I enjoy random encounters where you can encounter two groups fighting, and then kill survivors and loot their bodies for guns, ammo and stimpaks. This is truly Fallout RPG game. Much better then modern Fallout 76 which is very shallow despite modern graphics.

One of the best games I've ever played (I still have my original disc from '98) I wonder though, does the version from GOG have the patches and updates "built in"? I remember having to patch it from the original, and now defunct, publisher. Would we have to find a patch somewhere else?

Fallout is a question, and the answer is yes! The game does require you to jump through some hoops to play it, and even more to enjoy it. Most hoops come from technical difficulties, the other is moral, should you give effing Bethesda money for Fallout 2? Once you pass those hoops however, you've got one hell of a classic that you can sink hours upon hours into, with freedom you can find nowhere else these days. We are talking of a time before the ridiculous "nobody plays the evil route" statistic. So if you want to be the worst basterd in the entire Wasteland, seduce a young woman, get literally shotgun married by her father, find the slavers and sell your wife, shooting one of those damn pickpocketing kids on your way out, you can. Of course you can decide to be a lot less edgy than this, but it is a depth of choice that exists. The game will let you do things and in many cases will react to those choices. The game is excellent and a classic for a reason, Fallout 1 might be superior but require even more hoops for you to jump through. If you have never played this game, get ready for a rough introduction to the world of retro gaming, but the prize is worth the game.
