Simple, fun tactics game
What a blast from the past. LibDay is a strategy game with two layers - defeating the enemy in turn based missions, and building a headquarter and researching technology between them. There is not all that much lore to it. Each mission has a small story attached to it that is reflected in the objectives though, which is a nice touch. You might need to destroy some specific units to make sure a supply route is no longer blocked or occupy a certain building to steal intel. In actual play it still mostly is about removing everything that is red from the map. There is some tactical depth: only infantry detects mines and get a defense boost in a wood tile, some units ignore overwatch, the amount of overwatch fire a unit can provide depends on how many action points it has left at the end of the turn. There are also some balance issues. Stealth units, especially the enemy's teleporting ones (you will learn to hate them on base defense missions), also do a ton of damage, so while they are glas cannons it is often quite easy to overrun the enemy with them. It is often necessary to exhaust enemy overwatch fire by sending lots of cheap units ahead to soak it up before sending anything valuable to destroy them, or abuse gliders to drop troops right next to them if there is no AA nearby. Generally it might feel too much like sending a swarm into a meatgrinder until it clogs than using sophisticated tactics, but that can be fun once in a while too, right? Oh, and it has a really good soundtrack. Search for it on youtube to give it a listen, even if you are not interested in the game at all!
