Addictive for nerds

This is a game which appeals to your desire to: 1) Make massive, complicated systems 2) Optimize things 3) Automate things so you don't have to do any work. I suggest looking up a lets-play (especially of early to mid-game). If what you see looks interesting, you'll love this game. Don't worry about it being in development - there is more than enough game here already. Note: it may be best to buy through the developer's site. While GOG does receive updates, you need to log in to the developer's site to get mods. You may be able to purchase through GOG, and then ask nicely (I haven't tried yet), but you don't get a key automatically.

You are asked for a login immediately when you launch the game. You can either skip it "ask me later" or "disable updates", Nice one guys.

Simply the best

I have somewhere north of two thousand hours into this game and still enjoy playing. Unbelievably responsive dev team. Mods are fully and enthusiastically supported, complete with an integrated mod portal. The modding community produces more content than anyone can keep up with, so there's guaranteed to be something you'll enjoy even if you get bored of vanilla after 'only' a few hundred hours. The game itself is rigorously optimized to run flawlessly even on ancient hardware, or to scale to ridiculously huge bases on the latest and greatest. Online multiplayer supports up to several hundred people at once. I've played since version 0.15, and the game was release quality even then. They spent three more years putting a fine polish on every aspect of the game from interface to graphics to sound to usability features, plus some additional game mechanics. This game's interface will forever spoil you on other logistics games.

New alpha not on GOG, get via website

If you bought the game on GOG, but still want to play the very newest alpha, you can, simply register an account on factorio.com , go to your account, click to upgrade, and enter the SERIAL NUMBER you can find right here in you GOG games page. My review: the game is lovely. I just got it, and played for three days straight, just stopping for food and sleep. It's been a long time since a game grabbed me like this. If you like automating and optimizing an interesting world, go for it. My tip: don't read any wiki's etc, it's much more fun to figure stuff out on your own.

A very well-made game

I agree that the claim of being DRM-free is a little weaker than some, but to be fair, you only need an account to access services hosted by the developer. i.e. those things which they put additional ongoing expenses into. Namely the mod portal and multiplayer matchmaking. And you can still "side-load" mods and connect to friends directly without using any of that. As for the game itself, it isn't for everyone, but if you like brainy automation games there's a good chance you'll love this. I think it's fair to call it genre-defining.
