As the leader of the expedition, you will face difficult decisions about the use of your troops and your resources, as well as how to engage with the factions of the savage New World. Will you defy history and be a diplomatic envoy of peace? Or will you be a ruthless conqueror determined to lay all of the Aztec Empire at your feet?
Expeditions: Conquistador is a tactical roleplaying game with a touch of strategic resource management and a pinch of choose-your-own-adventure. Conquistador is set in a rarely visited part of history which is rife with mystery, political intrigue, and good old-fashioned violence.
Exotic historical setting with far-reaching ethical implications - balance your relations with the natives against the wishes of your expedition members.
Intuitive and flexible turn-based combat system with highly varied and detailed battlefields that will keep you on your toes.
Manage the morale, rations, and resources of your expedition as you overcome the dangers of the Aztec territories.
The conquistador era setting is quite interesting and the game-play mechanic (which is a mix of interactive storytelling, random events, party management and turn-based combat) is promising.
However, the whole experience is a bit flawed and feels rough around the edges. The graphics are below average, and the lighting and camera angles can be terrible. Also the combat feels as if there is still a lot of unused potential for more strategy and tactics.
Still, I had fun playing this game and I would not say it was a bad game. i would definitely want to see a sequel that fixes the problems of this one.
as FF Tactics lover I found this game really interesting.
random event pops up suddenly
different traps and skills to combine between party members
the graphic is good although it always limit how flexible we can adjust the camera position to get better view of the surrounding
I hope this game will add unique skill to each plot characters. originally they're the same as your party - soldiers, hunter - so I didnt see any interesting reason to accept them. if they add some unique skills that'll be more interesting.

It's commendable that despite having the very touchy subject of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, it manages to have a very neutral approach to this subject. It works really well since the game doesn't railroad you to reproduce Hernan Cortes' real life exploits, but gives you choices and alternatives as you take the shoes of his alternative history stand-in.
The Role-Playing part is well made, I feel. Even minor quests have multiple ways to approach, and you won't be stopped from fulfilling your RP fantasy. Want to be the kindest conquistador there was? Or maybe you want to be even more blood thirsty than anyone else in history? Fine, knock yourself out!
The map exploration is basically a Heroes of Might and Magic with a little more involved resource management system. At each end of day you get to designate tasks and you can use/gather resources in various ways. Decent feature.
The combat is... meh. Basically Firaxis Xcom but with less interesting abilities and not very informative UI. It also suffers from a leveling up system that isn't interesting and doesn't encourage you to specialize your soldiers,
But by far its biggest sin is its pacing. Before reaching Mexico, you spend an entire chapter on Hispaniola to defeat a rebellion. It's meant as a tutorial section, but it just manages to waste your time with something unrelated to the initial premise of exploring the New World. And to make it worse, the huge paradox is that this section also has by far the best story and characters.
Overall, it's a decent RPG, but it's not perfect by any means. Play it if you want an RPG set in a historical setting that gives you loads of freedom.
I grabbed this on a seasonal sale and what a gem I ended up with. Think Heroes of Might and Magic with conquistadors and you pretty much have this game in a nutshell. Good design. Intriguing story. Challenging gameplay. I've enjoyed it and think it was well worth the price.
(bought the game on Steam)
I'm not a turn-based RPG expert, but I found the gameplay and immersion particularly deep. Reminded me of my long hours playing HOMM III. You can't help getting attached to your followers very quickly!
