Evoland is a game and a story. The story of action adventure gaming as seen in many popular JRPGs and action RPGs, starting from the very beginning, when a few pixels were enough to make us dream for hours. You will discover a bit of video game history and very fun gameplay, covering 20 years of adventure gaming history.
Inspired by a wide variety of the most popular action RPGs and JRPGs, Evoland will take you from monochrome to full 3D graphics and from active time battles to real time boss fights, all with plenty of humor, and many references to legendary titles scattered along the game.
Play through the history of action-adventure video games.
Unlock many evolutions as you progress through the game, from old school 2D action/adventures to active time battles and full 3D action.
Have tons fun with the dungeons, puzzles, a heap of secrets to uncover, and dozens of achievements and stars to collect.
Having a background in various games, such as those that inspired Evoland, definitely helps when playing the game (both to enjoy the "story" and to know what to do sometimes). I bought this game when it was 80% off, and considering the hours spent in playing the game, it was definitely worth it! Evoland can be finished in a day if you can stick with it that long, and you will get an interesting glimpse into how games have changed over the years.
This is a short and fun game to play on your day off. You will definitely win it on a matter of 3 to 4 hours the most.
If you played Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy on your childhood days, you will feel the nostalgia of playing some of those great titles.
Also, the evolution of the game is pretty cool.
A really nice game with a nostalgic touch. The similiraty with the classic game serieses Zelda and Final Fantasy makes it easier to get into for the older generation (born in the 80s).
Normally, it is not my kind of computergame genre but the game surprised me and simply is fun. You unlock chests and everthing is getting more and more modern throughout the game. Moreover, the comments are sometimes quite harsh and ironic but that is ok for me because it is no serious game. The only negative point is the shortness of the game length but after the 'end' of the game you can collect cards and stars and explore the world. I am still struggling to find everything! I would be really happy to see a second part of the game which involves more classic games, more different computer graphics and genres ans a greater map.
4 stars from me!
I think that whoever gives a negative review to the game tries to review it as a game of its own, and that's not entirely correct, in my opinion.
Yes, as a game of it's own, this game is average at best and I'd give it 2 stars, maybe.
Its own graphics aren't spectacular, its own soundtrack is kinda dull, the story is a pretty lame save-the-town-from-evil kind of thing.
Maybe I've got it all wrong, but I don't think that in any way this game tries to be any good on its own.
The idea here is to show the evolution of video games in one product, with great emphasis on the RPG genre. And that it does well, and I don't remember any other game doing that as good as Evoland. I don't remember any developer even trying out this idea, either, which is actually a pretty good and interesting one!
I really enjoyed this game, and really enjoyed seeing the old good 2D 2-colors graphics turning gradually into a nicely done 3D HD manymany-colors graphics.
It's a short experience, but that's the way it should be, and it costs accordingly.
Also, you'll probably enjoy the game more if you're familiar with the old-classic RPG's because this game has many specific references.
One thing that annoyed me, to make the game more interesting the developers added achievements. They're pretty cool actually, and added a lot to the game, and I even wanted to complete them all. That's until I realized you don't really have any way to track your progress...UNLESS you own Evoland on Steam. Because Steam has an achievements system. The game itself, doesn't. So, if you're like me, and bought the game on GOG, and wish to track your achievements, you can only do so by manually check the list on Steam, or simply purchasing the game again on Steam.
Does it worth it? naaah. It's a shame there's no achievements tracking in the game!
All in all, the game is nice for a one-time playthrough. Give it a try if you're familiar with the old time of video gaming.
I thought the game froze @ at the start then realized it was going way back on the graphics. I didn't expect this to be a game of the year contender so I love it. It's just going through rpg history with you having to find treasure chests to unlock the modes and such. It was particularly enjoyable for me when you start getting graphics upgrades. I emphasize this is not a new battle system or story elements in anyway like 3D dot game for the ps3 did. If you go into it like that and you will love it but if you are looking for Skyrim or something you will be dissappointed.
