Engrossing RPG

I am having so much fun with this game! Feels a bit like Fallout 2 with a more complex set of skills and better engine and story line. About 50 hours in. Nice to have an old-fashioned CRPG where I need to use a whole variety of skills and combat isn’t the overwhelming focus. I’ve snuck around, picked locks, hacked terminals, fixed reactors, crafted all sorts of goodies (what looks like junk is not when you get into this), cooked meals, talked a lot, solved puzzles, laughed at Easter eggs…. I just had a weird-ass conversation with a bunch of people who had been driven insane and got them to give me the artifact I needed because I could speak their lingo. Well, and I’ve killed a few things too. Combat is not the main strength of this game, and I suspect you will find it unsatisfying if you approach it that way. The difficulty level can also make a huge difference. At the second lowest level I find it fairly easy and can focus on the story and atmosphere. At higher levels there is more difficulty and micromanagement. I recommend starting low and then moving up if you find it too easy.

Quite good game with some flaws

For current price it's definitely worth it, would give score like 7/10. Good type, quite similar to ATOM RPG or Wastelands 2, obviously to classic Fallouts. And this is the biggest advantage of this game, which by default suggests its good. Still have some bugs present, mostly smaller ones. From these annoying - several times my alt stopped working so I couldn't highlight items and had to restart game. Or, quest item kept disappearing from my inventory so I had to find cheat command to add it. Or quest that just "stuck" and I couldn't progress (mayor elections). Main minuses except bugs: 1) Big cities which seems empty in a great part, 2) Many quests required tiring travel between various locations back and forth, you just have a feeling of time lost while waiting for your party to run from one marker to another, 3) Experience system need balancing, at the very high levels I could level up by killing 2 standard enemies in one minute. 4) For me there is too many items that you can search - sound strange but there is a lot of searchable items in each area, usually contain junky stuff, and many have second or two of "animations". It was ok at the beginning, but later I was really tired. 5) Haven't noted any companion related quests, 6) Haven't felt a lot of depths in NPC, usually dialogues are quite short and can be summarised as "do this". Not sure if I will remember any of them in few days. 7) Dunno really how you can obtain any car. I just got "movable HQ" which a method of transport, however again a bit of wasted potential, as you cannot i.e. improve it anyhow - i.e. speed or looks. Anyway, had quite good fun with it, happy had a chance to play, however game could have been significantly better.

Cool story, terrible combat

So, I haven't played too much of it, basically just the day I bought it. The story seems super interesting, right off the bat. It's a cool concept, and if you want a point-and-click type of game just for the story then this is probably for you. I imagine with different stats you could take different dialogue options and get different results on other playthroughs. The combat however is probably one of, if not, the worst systems I've played. The fact that I basically do the same amount of damage with a three round burst and a single shot was super annoying to me. I don't understand how a single shot does 13 damage, then I come in with a burst and each shot is now doing 4 or 5 damage? I get that maybe they did that for balance reasons or something but I feel it's kind of dumb. In that case there's no reason to ever use the burst to get just about the same amount of damage. I like the whole anomalies thing, and scanning different things and people, but I could not keep going with that combat system. I also would have liked the ability to pause in the real time parts in order to issue commands and what not, but that's not in the game either. I guess they were going for a "realistic" (well, as realistic as a game of this type can be at least) with the whole no pausing, having thirst, hunger, fatigue, etc which I actually like, but then they give us bullets that somehow lose their kinetic force or something when firing in bursts (pretty sure that's not how guns work, last time I checked 3 bullet holes should = more damage than 1 bullet hole. Anyways, might boot up the game again and try melee or something, but not planning on playing this again anytime soon. Stick with Wasteland.

Not recommended

While this game has part of what is needed to be a good game in its genre, it falls well short so far. In its current state, it appears to be a partial imitation of games that are much better, falling short of those games. If I had a future choice between buying this game or much older games, I would buy the older games instead. Encased fails to fulfill the entire sense of depth that is fulfilled by games that are decades older.

Flawed but fun enough to replay

The good: Excellent atmospheric design, strongly inspired by Fallout 1-2 Engaging role-playing elements Solid combat system Weapon upgrade system adds depth Choice of faction/wing offers different gameplay experiences Customizable difficulty settings tailor the experience The bad: Companion characters are underwhelming and underdeveloped Some UI annoyances Pacing could use refinement No option to toggle helmet visibility Could benefit from more overall polish
