Satisfaction for non-purists

Despite some technical and longevity flaws, this game really shines as a labor of love for the genre. I came away deeply impressed by what the developers achieved and was thoroughly engrossed throughout. If you're a Dungeon Keeper purist who has been waiting for nothing more than a graphical upgrade then this game is not for you - the RTS mechanic, while great, is a radical departure from the spiritual/demonic predecessor. The multiplayer is also weak, mostly due to the lack of a community playing this game. In all other cases, fans of Dungeon Keeper should give this game some thought. The writing, voice acting and humor is spot on. The graphics, gameplay, music and sound are terrific - especially in terms of setting the mood across various areas of the landscape.

It was OK

Not having played any of its predecessors....it was an OK game. Worthy of one playthrough, but the replay value is low. Stuff I liked: -the Tower Defense aspect -a lot of micromanagement is done for you in the dungeon (though this is also sometimes frustrating when they won't do what you want even if you smack them) -digging to find new stuff -the general progression of creatures, esp in the Horde faction -the narrator doesn't take it too seriously (sometimes he's even a little funny...) Stuff I didn't: -parts of the UI, particularly grabbing stuff it wasn't often clear where your cursor was, and telling groups of creatures: "Go here, fight this" is very tedious underground (aboveground it's just like any other RTS) -the "quests" to upgrade your throne room gated by "evilness" which feels like it comes fairly arbitrarily -the enemies feel like there's 3 types - melee, ranged, and bards. Plus occasional bosses. There's different levels but you barely notice - "Is the druid girl an upgraded fairy? Oh well, she's dead now anyway." -the Demons are terrible at the first dungeon level (all melee? really?) but amazing at the second (mind flayers FTW); I rarely found it worth the time to even go to the third with them -campaign is short and not worth replying, and the maps are the same - 1 play with each faction (if that) and there's not anything else to do. -spells seemed mostly useless, aside from the recall spell (but see below) -many targeted attack spells (e.g. lightning bolt) did not work for me (Linux version)

Dungeons II

Charming, hilariously narrated (think: Stanley's Parable), fun and engaging. I think it holds up well, where many other attempts at succeeding Dungeon Keeper fails. It's not genius in its design and it is very silly. It doesn't have the same dark tone as DK - more like a cartoony comical one - but it works! I can't say much more than it's entertaining and fun to play. The campaign length isn't long, but it's not that short either. And I feel like it wouldn't hold up, if much longer than it is. The story isn't great, the systems are easy to manage. It's not innovative. I give it 4 stars alone, because it is that entertaining and enjoyable on sheer gameplay and narration alone.

Thoroughly mediocre

My first real experience with a dungeon management type game. It kept me playing through the campaign but there were a lot of frustrating moments - mainly from sluggish controls. So many things just seem like they could have been controlled in a less tedious way. Selecting units and dropping them with the hand is not well done. The other issue is everything is just so bland and vanilla fantasy - so much so that the game is making fun of this fact on the regular basis. But it kind of gets that feeling like the writers were getting really sick and tired of the joke towards the end of the game... The narrator is pretty good but I frequently questioned myself as to why I was wasting my time playing this game in the first place. The reason is that the dungeon management mechanics are actually pretty good, and you feel a real sense of progression and the above world exploration isnt terrible either. Overall its worth a try, I guess, if you don't have anything else better to play/do....

Very good Dungeon Keeper Homage

Imagine an easier Dungeon Keeper but with updated graphics, more comedy and you can go up to the surface for real-time strategy elements. That's it... More features doesn't mean better mind you, the interface is a bit clunky at times. Some lag as well, but nothing game breaking. Definitely had fun with it though. Recommended.
