A Gentle place to start
Despite being labelled the 4th game in the series, this is actually a good place to start if you haven't played any DROD games before or have a lot of trouble when the difficulty ramps up. The DROD games are the type of games that can really hurt your brain and make you think outside the box with their puzzle design - but the flipside of that coin is that you feel like an absolute genius when you've been sitting for hours on an annoying room, to suddenly have either that lightbulb moment or stumble on a couple of experimental moves that you didn't mean and the solution begins to present itself... Only to discover that the next room is just as hard as the previous one. It can be taxing on the braincells - but in a (punishingly) good way. DROD 4 has a much gentler learning curve, possibly even too gentle to begin with, but new players may find it just about right. Don't get me wrong, there are rather difficult parts and if you're good (I wasn't) you can find a secret set of areas after the game, which are designed to challenge anyone's experience. But onto the game. It's a turn-based, top-down puzzler, which is easy to learn but tough to master - each room must be cleared of all enemies before it's is considered secure, and each level (floor) must be cleared of all enemies before you can travel to the next. The difficulty you will find later is that are MANY many ways to fail a room or die, with few or only one solution to it - but you can restart (or use checkpoints) as many times as you like - one very handy saving grace, that keeps you from walking away. To be blunt, experienced players will not find this a challenge - in comparison to the previous titles, this is a walk in the park. I'm not that great at DROD games, but I believe I only looked into the forums ONCE for a hint/solution to a room. But for anyone looking to start, this is a nice entrance into an addictive puzzle series of games. AND you will feel smarter after completing one DROD game.
