Casablanca, 2219 -- Zoë Castillo is, at first glance, a very normal young woman, but she is about to get involved in a conspiracy that spans parallel worlds and hundreds of years. Something is affecting the world -- static interference is disrupting technology, causing Zoë to see visions of a ghostly presence that is inhabiting a black house in a wintry landscape. As Zoë embarks on a journey where she eventually discovers a magical world behind our own, she will need to make decisions about what's important to her and what she's willing to risk for the people she loves. Zoë will need all her courage to unravel the dangerous web in which she, and the world around her, is entangled.

A (Deeply) Flawed Crystal

Ragnar Tornquist's The Longest Journey was a triumph of a game, crafting beautiful worlds for one to explore both geographically and emotionally. April's journey is a beautiful mirror of our own journey, and given half the chance I could wax quite poetic about how it succeeded both as a game and as a work of interactive art. The sequel, however... well.... It's just not as good. There, I said it. It was very painful, much like telling a dear old friend that they've changed, and not for the better. While others will no doubt complain about such things as the combat and stealth segments (which truly were useless, frustrating and an overall detraction from the original game's feeling of realistic immersion), the truth about Dreamfall is that, although Tornquist's beautiful world remains intact, the thoughtful, original storyline that made the original such a success is gone. Following multiple characters through the story, while seeming like a wise move on paper, only ensures that you will never properly care about any of them. In one case, a soldier struggles to come to a realization which is painfully obvious from the first scene of the game, which becomes an exercise in futility; in another, a previously beloved character from the first game flails about uselessly; and in the third... well, I honestly don't even remember, it was so forgettable. Add to all of this the fact that the game has no ending (and I mean that in the worst possible way) and one feels that all of the monotony and subpar storylines have truly been for naught. The outward beauty of the game is commendable; even today, the artwork holds up well. Characters are voiced by talented artists, but no amount of conviction can bring meaning to a story which simply isn't there. I certainly wouldn't be so critical of the game were it not following up on one of the greatest games of an era. Call it "Phantom Menace" Syndrome: the game, though no great classic, seems far worse for its connection to something so magical and meaningful, and may receive just a bit more blame than it would have deserved on its own merits. For this fact, and for the fact that it does provide another (pointless and sometimes frustrating) window into Tornquist's beautiful world, I give it three stars out of five. If you are desperate to enter that world and are prepared for a frustrating ride without any good destination, then by all means, partake. However, as I would say about Phantom Menace to any true Star Wars fan, unless one simply can't live without it, it may be best to steer clear.

Disappointment Has A Name

While a beautiful game visually, Dreamfall lacks the depth and gameplay of The Longest Journey. Not only this, but the story seems to invalidate all that April worked for, distort her as a character, and then stop. Meaning, just as I thought we were ramping up for the 2nd half of the game, the credits rolled. The death of a dream!

A game to make you cry... in a good way.

I was an avid gamer for many years, when I first touched Dreamfall. Always enjoying adventures since the early days of adventure storytelling ( Maniac Mansion), I expected good riddles, fun story and comical characters. The beginning quickly made me realize, that I was in for something quite different. Dreamfall is more like an adventure combined with some elements of a roleplaying game. The classic fun riddles, that define the genre, are replaced by a very deep, compelling story, interesting characters and puzzles, that are placed logically in the flow of the game world and it's challenges (just like in the first part The Longest Journey). To spice up things, Dreamfall attempts to bring an action element to adventure gaming, like Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis, but it didn't fully succeed. The controls are a bit weak and the combat/action systems are not fully polished. I personally didn't care about those systems either way. I saw them as another challenge and the story propelled me forward. In the end it's a great game. A great story. It's the first and only game, that was able to make me cry at the ending. It's been many years since Dreamfall was released but I still vividly remember the emotional ride, that the game made me feel and I cherish every moment. The ending is somewhat open, since it was originally planned to continue the series, but don't let that stop you from experiencing this masterpiece.

OK on its own/dogs breakfast of a sequel

So, my story with series began with Dreamfall TLJ sometime in 2010 and I really enjoyed it. I enjoyed it so much that when Dreamfall: Chapters (DTLJ's sequel) came out, I bought the new game along with The Longest Journey (Dreamfall TLJ's predecessor from 1999). After a couple of years of procrastinating, played it, right before replaying Dreamfall TLJ a second time. Sadly, my second playthrough of this game was not a good one. The original Longest Journey (1999) visuals made my eyes bleed but man oh man was that story amazing & man were those characters lovable: especially April Ryan who was goofy and lovable but also clever & resourceful. Strong but still humble. They took April Ryan in Dreamfall: TLJ & made her a secondary character & sucked all the life out of her, making her unrecognizable. That would have been ok if the new protagonist had some depth to her and something new to contribute for the series but sadly, Zoe, has as much depth and charisma as a British accented puddle of water. TLJ's plotline was also way more thought out & developed than Dreamfall TLJ. It had many incomplete threads that could have easilly filled another 2 sequels. When we left TLJ, Mercuria was invaded by the Tyren - a beast race of barbarian controlled by the Vanguard, a conspiracy that spanned across two universes. Although thwarted, the Vanguard were still a strong and present danger in both Stark and Arcadia - far from defeated. Where are the vanguard in Dreamfall? Gone! Fight for the balance? Gone! The Sentinels? Gone! The Tyren? Gone! Apperently, a couple of weeks after they invaded they got wiped out by another invading and occupying force before we even get to see what they looked like. Hell, Dreamfall even casually mentions a collapse in Stark's civilization occuring after TLJ but insultingly glosses over it. Why did such an amazing and still viable plot-line/main character get buried under a rug only to be replace by one that are nowhere near as interesting?

One of most immersive walking sims ever

Doing this from memory: Story: Enjoyable mystery unfolding, immersive, imaginative, with significant milestones. Characters as good as in a good book: you'll grow attached. Art direction kept pace with a good imagination. Voice acting stellar for its time, like its predecessor. Graphics dated, but work with chosen stylization. Music was powerful, epic to moody, relevant, and suiting what's transpiring. Controls had glitches, but only a few times would you curse them out loud. Gameplay had some unintuitive parts, and an annoying bunch of grinding. Sometimes you'll scream with the overly lengthy dialogues, so just put subtitles on and when it gets too annoying, hit space bar to speed through the dialogues as fast as you can read them, or you may lose important content. I did need to look up a cheat one or two times when I got stuck. The 'your choices will have consequences' reminders seemed ominous, but I don't know if they did. Parts of when I'd get stuck would have me puzzling over it in the real world until I could get back and try something else: most of the time that worked (testament to the design). Combat: combat was some of the worst ever encountered, like there was no rhyme or reason, just insane button mashing. I did find certain patterns, but at most they might work 60% of the time, and forget combos. I tried with controllers & keyboard/mouse, default & custom mappings. Overall: If you enjoyed The Longest Journey (predecessor), you'll enjoy revisiting some of the places here in 3D, and continuing with the characters/story. I definitely suggest continuing with the sequel to this one too (Dreamfall Chapters). For a few months afterwards, I kept final savegames and revisited some locales again. Anytime a game leaves you with such long-term memories and feelings, as with a book, it's worthwhile. I still haven't sold my copy.
