Casablanca, 2219 -- Zoë Castillo is, at first glance, a very normal young woman, but she is about to get involved in a conspiracy that spans parallel worlds and hundreds of years. Something is affecting the world -- static interference is disrupting technology, causing Zoë to see visions of a ghostly presence that is inhabiting a black house in a wintry landscape. As Zoë embarks on a journey where she eventually discovers a magical world behind our own, she will need to make decisions about what's important to her and what she's willing to risk for the people she loves. Zoë will need all her courage to unravel the dangerous web in which she, and the world around her, is entangled.

I adore this game and series. I'm biased and for good reason. The worlds are beautifully realised, the characters feel real and the interweaving stories are multi-layered and intriguing. It's incredibly nice to look at and lets players find out more about April from the first game in the series, 'The Longest Journey' (which I heartley recommend).
Summary: Graphically it's still a good looking game. Plays well but the interface can be a bit awkward when Zoe gets into a confined space (you'll see what I mean when she's in the security zone). Still no final part to the series despite arts council funding in the developers home country and some artwork, fmv and test work having been released the year before last (2010). I don't feel that the score should be dropped because a further game has not been released although I hope it does come to pass. Only the occasional control issue stops me giving it a full five stars, but it should give the option of four and a half.
Stay with me while I give you some background that is relevant to my review. I purchased this game as an impulse buy while out shopping at Office Depot around 2006/07. I had never played or heard of The Longest Journey and was just looking for a pretty adventure game to run on my new PC. At the time I was a casual gamer.
I instantly fell in love with the characters and the world. I related to Zoe in ways that I never had with other protagonists and I wanted nothing more than to have a plushie of Wonkers. I LOVE the combination of sci-fi and magic. The inventory puzzles are engaging and mostly logical, with the focus field eliminating pixel hunting. The graphics are stunning. Not just due to the quality the engine allowed, but also due to the art direction favoring style over realism.
I had one major hang-up though: I was bad at the game and unwilling to repeat sequences more than a few times. I did struggle through after a few years of intermittent play, thinking the whole time that I'm just bad at stealth and combat. Then I started to play more games. Games with GOOD stealth/combat. As other reviewers have noted, Dreamfall's stealth/combat is just bad.
Since it took me so long to finish the game, I was absolutely gutted by the cliffhanger ending. I felt betrayed after putting so much time and effort into it. How could someone okay that cliffhanger with no guaranteed follow-up? Lucky for you dear reader, you don't have to go through that betrayal! The third and final game (Dreamfall Chapters) exists.
Why did I include all of that background? Because I wanted to show just how gripped I was by the story. Dreamfall hooked me. Even before playing the first or third game I loved the story as a whole. It was so fresh and unique - and it still is. I've played it multiple times now, and whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone that loves to get sucked into a story. I only have one caveat: use a trainer to enable god mode to save yourself from annoyance.
THE SEQUEL HAS FINALLY BECOME A REALITY FELLOW GAMERS AROUND THE WORLD!
Dreamfall Chapters has entered pre-production in 1st of November 2012!
Tørnquist stated (unofficially) that the Chapters will be similar to Dreamfall in terms of gameplay. The player characters will be controlled from third-person perspective but the "focus field" will no longer be used. The gameplay will be a mix of "puzzles and exploration and conversations and mini-games and action". Tørnquist stated that the Dreamfall combat system will be removed altogether. The game will have more puzzles than Dreamfall but they will be better integrated into the plot than in The Longest Journey and balanced by a large amount of world and story exploration.[6] Like combat, the stealth sections will also be removed. The gameplay focus will be on exploring the story, rather than quick reaction and manual dexterity.
Tørnquist has commented that the story of Dreamfall Chapters will pick up exactly where Dreamfall ended or even before that, to present its ending from an alternative point of view. According to him, the story will have a multi-threaded narrative and follow several characters, both new and old, including "a very exciting new heroine", who will presumably be the new protagonist. Tørnquist confirmed that Zoë Castillo and Kian Alvane, as well as the episodic character Cortez, will be returning in Chapters but refused to comment on April Ryan's situation after the ending of Dreamfall.[ On his blog, he also dropped several hints at the future development of the story.
The subtitle "Chapters" refers to the theme of the game, which Tørnquist describes as "chapters of life" and "life in chapters", such as birth, life, death.
On November 1, 2012, it was announced that Ragnar Tørnquist's newly-founded studio Red Thread Games began the pre-production for Dreamfall Chapters. Because Funcom's focus has shifted to online games, the company decided to license the rights to The Longest Journey Intellectual Properties to Tørnquist's development studio, who will fund and produce the game independently. Red Thread Games is a completely autonomous studio who is going to both develop and publish the game with its own resources. The Norwegian Film Institute provided a grant of 1 million NOK (ca. $174,000) for Red Thread Games to begin pre-production. The total budget of the project is estimated at about $1 million, which Tørnquist plans to raise via a crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter. Red Thread Games is "not taking any Funcom employees" but the game will be produced in close cooperation with Funcom.
The release date for Dreamfall Chapters is yet to be announced. When asked on Formspring, Tørnquist estimated that the development cycle of Chapters will take "around eighteen months", which would put the estimated release date around April 2014, counting from the official announcement.
Although Dreamfall Chapters was initially announced as an episodic video game, this idea was scrapped in favor of a full-length game when the pre-production started in 2012.
The target platforms are Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X, because the developers believe "that's where The Longest Journey fans are". However, other platforms, such as tablet computers and home consoles, will also be considered.
In other words we need no wake up in a world where only 2 of the games exist, as we can continue dreaming of us unfolding the chapters of life one after another...
This game is very creative and immersive for its time, and there are not many games which have been able to tell this type of story and recreate such an interesting concept world for players to explore since. The game story is told as such like a thriller sitcom, some may not like this design but i feel it works great for story building and keeps things simple if not a little cheesy at times. The main protagonist is relatable to many young adults and there is some good character development throughout the journey for players who are invested in the storyline. Luckily, the story is intriguing and has many interesting twists and turns, I also feel the length of the main campaign is perfect, however, as others would have mentioned, the ending is a little too ambiguous and open for interpretation. I actually enjoyed the world design more in this game over the Longest journey, however, I do wish the longest journey was remade with modern graphics to get a reimagining and grander scale of the fantasy environments. Overall i definitely recommend this title.
