Set in a huge open world, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen presents a rewarding action combat experience. Players embark on an epic adventure in a rich, living world with three AI companions, known as Pawns. These partners fight independently, demonstrating prowess and ability that they have developed based on traits learned from each player. Players can share these Pawns online and reap rewards of treasure, tips and strategy hints for taking down the terrifying enemies. Pawns can also be borrowed when specific skills are needed to complete various challenging quests.

The PC port doesn't introduce much new and certain elements could be stronger, but Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen still shines as a uniquely enjoyable RPG.

Character customization, combat, and the weird story and brilliant end-game all make this one of my favorite action-RPG's of all time. Meanwhile, the Dark Arisen changes make the game somewhat more traversable and streamlined, turning a fun but frustrating game into something far more enjoyable. There's nothing really new here, but it's great to finally have the game on PC.

If anything, Dark Arisen reminds me just how much I missed my time with Dragon's Dogma, and how I'd love to see another one in the works. Here's hoping Gransys has more adventures for us in future!

Think Oregon Trails in Forgotten Realms
I never played it on console when it first came out several years ago because of mixed reviews. At the time DD was considered something of an oddity; a sort of Eastern look at Western style open world RPGs with some mechanics that were heavily criticized at the time (restricted fast travel). I first played it last year when the PC port dropped. In my first playthrough I enjoyed but wasn't just wowed with DD, but then I began my second playthrough with a self-imposed rule against using fast travel and suddenly the whole game made sense--later I learned that the game was originally designed to be played that way but Capcom had caved to mixed reviews who complained about the lack of fast travel and made it much easier and virtually unlimited to use). With the exception of Souls games, you won't find another action RPG with as many buffs, debuffs, and game mechanics because Dragon's Dogma, despite all its classes, attributes, weapons, armor, and loot, is more an adventurer simulator at heart than an RPG. It’s the Oregon Trails in Forgotten Realms.

Open World RPG with awesome combat
I love this RPG, not for the story, which is 'meh' at best, but for the seriously awesome combat. Melee combat plays like a Monster Hunter game, if Dante from Devil May Cry was available. No comparison to Dark Souls, really, which this game gets a lot of. That game has very limited combat by design whereas this game has a very open system that allows for you to chain together some very flashy combos and what not. Magic Combat can be pretty difficult at the beginning due to your casting easily being interrupted and the pawns not yet being good at aggroing enemies. As you progress and unlock higher skills and augments (perks) magic becomes even more fun as you literally bombard enemies with meteors, earthquakes, and tornadoes (which is both awesome and a hindrance in closed environs). Casting can take a long time even in the end game, so plan carefully when going against some of the more dangerous foes. As for the Dark Arisen dlc, that comes in a massive optional dungeon when you find the game's most difficult enemies and strongest weapons. As far as I know you can challenge said locale nearly immediately, but I would warn you against doing that as even the weakest foes in that place well decimate even mid-late game parties in mere seconds. There is a romance partner in this game, and although only a handful of possible options have unique implications on the story, you can pretty much woe any NPC you come across, even store owners. You can finish this game in a few hours if you really want to (there's even a speedrun mode), but you can also drop long hours if you choose to. Finally. when you beat the game, you can new game + with all them items, equip, exp, etc you gained. This game really has a little bit of everything. Get it.
