There’s not much of a precedent for music about settlers on Mars discovering a portal to hell, so it must have seemed like quite a unique task for Mick Gordon as he set out to compose original music for Doom. His intense, sprawling creation is the perfect complement to the soul-crushing first-person shooter, offering gripping heavy metal guitar riffs (“Rip & Tear”), relentlessly pounding drums (“Bfg Division”), and terrifying industrial synths (“Hellwalker”). The world evoked through these tracks is a horrifying projection—one that we should never hope to experience.
Love the soundtrack, one of the very best soundtracks ever made for sure, but please, please, please give us the option to download it as a FLAC or even WAV file to be able to truly appreciate it.
The fact that this OST spawned imitators, memes, and likely will become synonymous with composer Mick Gordon, tells you that you have lightning in a bottle right here. One of those rare times in media where all the stars align and a flawless gem emerges.
It's just a shame that this version only gives us MP3s and not FLAC or WAV. Hopefully GOG can fix that soon.
The music itself is fantastic (and good on Bethesda for actually providing a complete track list on the store page!), but I am pretty disappointed that it is only provided as sub-optimal .mp3 files (320kbps bitrate in joint stereo, lossy encoding).
As raw/original flac or wave files, that soundtrack would be an unmitigated and heartfelt recommendation from me; Offering a compressed mp3 version only, however, does a bit of disservice to the otherwise *excellent* soundtrack, and takes some of its shine off.
NB: The entire list clocks in at 293 MByte after unzipping, the stated 260MByte refers to the zip file.
