Great port, but still has censored IWADs

This new port supersedes the Unity versions that Bethesda has been selling for the last few years and includes a whole host of new and very welcome features; Boom compatibility being the big one from my point of view. There are also some really nice extras in this package such as the "id Vault" which brings a lot of pre-release spritework and contextual information and is great to see presented in this way for the long-time fan. In many ways this port attempts to be the "definitive" version of the classic Doom experience, but unfortunately this is overshadowed by the inclusion of the modern censored IWADs which feature things like green crosses on health pickups (required under the Geneva convention or some such nonsense, but very jarring if you've been playing since '93) and modified artwork in the Wolfenstein 3D levels. I wish there was a way Bethesda could provide us with a remastered version of the game that includes the proper IWAD versions, but unfortunately until that happens there will always be a need to plug the IWADs from the DOS versions into a source port for the true experience.

Cannot mod without signup.

I love the new port, but I cannot put any Boom compatible mods in the game without a Bethesda account and that ruins it for me. There should be a drag and drop feature for mods in the game that allow for independent download and install. That is the point of GOG after all.

Censored, limited, inferior experience

The medkits are once again censored, instead of pills we now have a green cross instead of the color red, that bothers me a lot and it shouldn't be like this. The wolfenstein 3D secret level is censored, too. You aren't allowed to change the files because it is against their EULA, so if you have the original WAD of Doom 2 and you switch it with the one that's censored it will be just like playing the original Doom, but you might lose access to this port. It worked at first but when I played multiplayer it reset everything. They've said that at any given moment, they can decide to stop supporting this port, meaning they will shut it down and you won't be able to access the games because at all times you need to be connected to the Bethesda servers. From the way I look at it, this ain't DRM free, not sure why it's on GOG. If there's a mod that you enjoy they can remove it due to them being a bunch of snowflakes and can't take a joke. This is what happened with the mod Thatcher's Techbase. We must protect the modern audience on a mature game! There is no mouselook support, the UI is terrible and confusing, the moment that I launched the game it crashed until I switched it to Directx11. When there's too many sounds happening all at the same time the engine freaks out. For example, let's say there's a bunch of enemies shooting, there's doors opening and shutting, monsters being killed, and so on, and then you use your chaingun, guess what?You won't be able to hear your gunshots until the area is clear. Some of the tracks are missing and I ended up with one that sounded like crap, like it was coming out from a Gameboy. Just get yourself GZDoom or chocolate Doom, it will be way better.

Censored, un-original, bethesda mod only

Way better than Unity, but falls far short of simply using GZDoom on any version of windows along with my old WAD files from original CD-ROMs or floppy disks. You can't even mod without a Bethesda Nanny - mod support only works with BOOM thru Bethesda.net. This is a horribly dissapointing Waste Of Money. Well, maybe it's ok on sale for a price of 1 Yen so I can burn it to a DVD and then set it on fire in the dumpster.

Good collection, meh port.

First of all: Thanks for putting this together and exposing a potential host of new players to Doom's awesomeness. Couldn't really care about green crosses and whatnot, as long as the flair is preserved. However, I do have a few problems with it. - Unskippable logos. Bethesda seriously needs to cut this nonsense back. I know who made Doom and who bought the rights to it, thank you. If you don't, you might have been living under a rock for 30 years. - Why someone would omit the mouse look of the newer ports, but implement such tomfoolery like mouse smoothing and acceleration, is a beyond me. - Fails to "sign into Multiplayer". Probably wants a bEtHeSdA.NeT account... For a classic Doom game? Yeah No. Absolutely not. - Correctly detects Vulcan under Wine, but introduces considerable input lag with enabled vertical sync. If you don't have any classic Doom game yet, grab yourself a copy though. The vault looks interesting. And if you want to play, you can copy the WADs from the install folder, check out what belongs where in the Doom Wiki, set them up with ZDL and play them through GZDoom. Much better gameplay. Also makes modding more comfortable.
