Fantastic
I bought this game again just to be rid of the Bethesda bloat. A great port of Doom 64, I always wanted the play it with a mouse and keyboard on the Nintendo and now we all can. The true Doom 3 has come home! Rejoice!

If you buy it at discounted price
... than it is totally worth it. This is an old, originally Nintendo 64 exclusive game with updated graphics engine and modernized control sheme (work great with keyboard + mouse combo too). The look and feel is good, horror aspect, the sound and ambient etc. is spot on. Playing on the following configuration: AMD Ryzen 1600AF, 16 GB RAM, Geforce 1030GT, 480 GB SATA, Windows 10 Home 64-bit 21H2.

Doom 2's sequel on the N64
Doom 64 is a direct follow-up from Doom 2 story wise and mechanically feels much like Doom 2; however, Doom 64 deviates from Doom and Doom 2 by playing with darker environments, an ambient horror-like soundtrack, and more focus on the story of the Doom Marine after the events of Doom 64. Does this all work? Gameplay: overall fairly good, the rewards for secret hunting are definitely much better than in Doom and Doom 2 since you'll get a pretty overpowered late-game weapon out of being a completionist; however, I really wish Doom 64 kept the par-time system since it motivated mastery of the game's levels and mechanics if you wanted to be below par. Weapons here are also pretty good, though the shotgun and super shotgun will be carrying you for most of the game alongside the chaingun, cell-based weapons are much much less viable unfortunately but that does make them feel meatier and powerful. New monsters are a bit of a letdown and some enemies such as revenants do not appear at all, which is a shame since they'd play nicely with the level design. Graphics/sound design: I am very mixed in this area, on one hand Midway did a great job with some enemy and weapon sprites but weapons such as the shotgun and super shotgun have very unsatisfying weapon animations so they just don't feel as punchy. Darker environments are nice too, but you might need to turn up your gamma to see in some levels. Sound design is however fantastic across the board, weapons have a satisfying click to them, monsters are easy to id by sound, and the soundtrack isn't in your face (think like the PS1 Doom port, it's much the same soundtrack wise). Level design: mixed again, some really great levels but since 64 introduces some puzzles like those in Hexen/Heretic, it's easy to sometimes get lost in levels or find all the secrets. Overall I'd say Doom 64 is a good sequel if not a little flawed at points. (Plenty of ports out there, the copy here is on KEX but Doom64 EX Plus is worth a look too)

Doom 64 is an unexpectedly great addition to the family of official classic Doom campaigns. The game also functions as a sort of transition between the action-oriented gameplay of Doom I/II and the horror-driven experience of Doom 3. The gameplay is the classic Doom formula with some small edits. While some enemies are not present from the previous games, I can't say miss them, especially the Archvile. The unique and powerful Unmaker weapon is a treat to use in combat, and its upgrade system allows for a rare sense of both progression and incentive to find level secrets for classic Doom. The original and new maps included here are of great quality and offer an engaging challenge on higher difficulty levels. This port allows for the best possible visual experience for Doom 64. Most notably, it allows the player to turn off the N64-style texture filtering that makes surfaces look like mud. This allows for the art direction of the new graphics to shine, as many of the new sprites and textures are good. This is a welcome change-of-pace for classic Doom fanatics, who may be tired of the Doom I/II graphics that have been often reused in map packs. The ambient soundtrack is a hit-or-miss. It definitely adds a new sense of desolation and feeling trapped in a forsaken dimension, but I feel that it detracts from the action. It does take getting used to, especially if the player has recently played Doom I or II. This was likely an experiment to change the game to be more horror focused, as in Doom 3, and it seems to fall a bit flat. There are no story bits to gnaw on here, despite the new Lost Levels campaign supposedly connecting this game to Doom (2016). After playing through all maps, there doesn't seem to be any real narrative hook to the newer Doom games. Doomguy is doomed, that's all! This game is definitely worth picking up alongside the other classic Doom games. It's great to finally see this officially on PC with a quality port!

Well worth it
Got it really cheap on the current sale. I never actually played this version of Doom on N64 but it's a lot of fun and plays really intuitively with a controller. Great if you want to kick back for some casual old school Doom fun as opposed to being propped up at a desk with the keyboard and mouse.
