It's such a rush of nostalgia to play this game again, since it was both my first RPG and one of the first "real" games I ever played. Glad to see it's not forgotten!

I mention the case of Butcher getting stuck in the stairs in my Master's thesis about pathfinding. I presented the thesis at my university today - March 7, 2019. It was rated "A", granting me the title of Master of Telecommunications.

This is a review of this GoG edition and NOT a review of Diablo 1 in general. Important points: - Does not come with Hellfire. - It IS compatible with original Diablo single_X.sv saves - Duplication glitch still works same as patch 1.02 (game appears to be based off patch 1.09) Pros: - It's Diablo 1 Cons: - "High resolution support" means ONLY that it scales the original 640x480 graphics to fit modern high DPI displays. - Doesn't include Hellfire Neutral: - Adds TCP support For purists who rage about maintaining the "fidelity to the original", that's what this is. It's Diablo 1.09 with a wrapper to scale the video. However, the original Diablo 1 *can* run in Windows 10 and the Diablo 1 modding community has mods that scale the video, add TCP support, AND which provide widescreen support that this official edition does not do. The only people who should buy this edition are those who have never owned the game (or never owned it legally) and wish to own it now.

For new players who love Action-RPGs, and want a taste of the genre’s history, I highly recommend this rerelease that is updated to run better on modern systems. Be aware that you’ll be dealing with antiquated movement, menus, equipment info, and looting systems. But this rerelease is still a great way to experience this classic for a first-time player and a good value at $10. For returning players who want a modernized rerelease, this version is fair but lazy. It will run better on modern systems but the graphical improvements are basic at best. There are two version of the game. The first one is called ‘Diablo’ and “This version features LAN connections only & high-resolution support.” The second is titled ‘Diablo (Classic)’ and “This version features Battle.net support & original SVGA graphics.” Thus, LAN but not online, is the only mode that takes advantage of the videos settings for turning up the resolution and applying other modern enhancements. Even though the ‘Diablo’ version does support 4K resolutions the aspect ratio stays the same as there is no widescreen support. You’re getting, for $10, a version of Diablo that will run on modern systems and has slightly updated resolution and graphical capabilities limited based on playmode. If what you're expecting is Diablo 1.5 then this is not for you. Players expecting Diablo 1.5 and comfortable with modding this may be for you. Diablo 1 HD aka: Belzebub makes Diablo more modernly accessible. It adds modern qualities of life, gives in game video settings and widescreen support, and looks gorgeous! This mod does make the game more difficult (mobs are bigger), and adds new classes, quests, items, spells, bosses, and locations as well as general fixes and tweaks to bugs and drop rates. The last version of this mod released in Sep 2014 and still looks better than this rerelease. If you're in the market for a new copy of Diablo and comfortable modding it $10 isn’t too bad and makes this a 4/5 star game.
