When Diablo 1 first came out it looked beautiful after playing the standard pixelated games like Doom among others. I managed to get to level 9 and had to give up at the time in frustration. Then Diablo 2 came out and I can't remember how many times I have played it through but have to say it is one of the most satisfying games of its kind that has ever been made. The only thing I never cared for was the fact that my cd drive/burner ran all the time when playing because of DRM. I probably burned up a couple drives playing Diablo 2 over time. When I saw Diablo 1 come on sale my first reaction was to buy it if only to encourage Blizzard to consider to release more games DRM free through GOG. Reading the news threads I see that a large number of people share this hope and want to see Diablo 2 included DRM free on GOG and judging from the customer base that GOG has it would be a wise decision for Blizzard. I know I won't be making a Blizzard account to buy a game there, but they have it sold if its on GOG. I installed D1 and started to play and uhg... What a dog. It hasn't aged well at all and doesn't even come close to the quality that Diablo 2 provided. Diablo 1 was a starting place but only for the moment. Yes it has its place in history and can be considered a good old game but there are plenty of Diablo clones that have been made that are much better than D1 from the Divinity series to Torchlight that would be more worthy of the time invested if fun is a consideration. Diablo 1 became very tedious by the third level and I saw why I had drifted away from it on my first play years ago. In a perfect world Blizzard would have released Diablo 2 on GOG with Diablo 1 as a free addition like Bethesda did with the Elder Scrolls franchise offered with Doom, Morrowind and Oblivion. Let's hope the incredible response from GOG customers will encourage Blizzard to include Diablo 2 among other games they are keeping exclusive available for the GOG library.

The real classic Diablo.....Challenging but fair...A game most said will never make it to GOG........ Get it because it's really better than the sequels.. Real fun dungeon crawler...

To start, I will mention that I played this game a lot when it first came out so I am not new to this Diablo game or the franchise at all. Diablo 1 was indeed a genre defining game that gave PC gamers a taste of RPG mechanics but with a much faster and more interesting loot system at the time. Unfortunately, despite creating the Hack'n'Slash genre, Diablo 1 is very slow and boring by today's standards. Hack'n'Slash games have become faster paced in every way: movement, enemy behaviors, loot systems and character progression. If you have enjoyed more recent games like Grim Dawn, Diablo III, Torchlight II and Path of Exile you will find that Diablo I is definitely a case of "you think you want it but really you don't". I understand Diablo I was breaking new ground and that we would not have any of the above mentioned games without it. What I am saying is that there is no reason to go back to Diablo I regardless of how much you think you are going to enjoy it. The die hard Diablo fan like myself could only endure about 12 hours of this game before feeling bored. Everything about this game is boring except the music and overall atmosphere. I have given this game three stars based on my own subjective metrics. Those being: 1 star for being awesome when first released and a genre defining game. 1 star for music and atmosphere which still holds up well today. 1 star for having at nice random map and loot system that does encourage exploration.
