I was absolutely in shock when the news was posted on Facebook. This is literally the last game I ever expected to get released from Blizzard. Let me get this out of the way first, because some jerks on here don't understand what a review is. This game is absolutely a 5/5. There is a special place in Hell for people who give this game a lower score, simply because they feel the price is too high. Please, for all that is holy GOG, start editing these reviews. Is this game worth $9.99? Yes, yes it is. What are you getting for this price? Three completely unique characters. Randomized quests and dungeons, so you will never play the game the same twice. Even today, that's rare in video games. This offers hundreds of hours of gameplay. If you get bored, just download one of the dozens of mods available. This is arguably tied with Diablo 2 for being the best in the franchise. It is definitely the most graphic and scariest compared to the sequel, and certainly better than Diablo 3 by far. The voice acting is superb for its age, and is still impressive today. The story is intricate and fascinating. The dark Gothic style helps to outweigh the admittedly relatively dated graphics. The monsters are unique and terrifying in a way that not even the sequels could match. Compared to the sequels, terrain and positioning is much more important, i.e strategic choke holds such as doorways and rivers. Again, even Diablo 2 didn't have as much focus on this. The Butcher is still one of the scariest bosses in video game history. He was almost comedic in Diablo 3: "Vegetables bad, meat good!" I'm not even kidding. I was laughing my ass off while fighting him, instead of being terrified out of my wits. Buy this game. Period. It is absolutely worth the price tag, and is one of Blizzard's greatest accomplishments. Buy this game, if only to learn why people are so disappointed in Blizzard's later works. You won't regret it.

Stay a while and listen... I first played Diablo on the PlayStation. Heresy? Perhaps. I spent countless hours delving into the catacombs and caverns beneath the blighted monastery on the edge of Tristram. I hung out with Deckard Cain, talked shop with Griswold the blacksmith, and showed Wirt his leg once or twice to get a rise out of him. Seriously, though, this game provides one of the all time great hack and slash experiences. It offers the chance to play as one of three character classes (Warrior, Rogue, or Sorcerer) and explore a town of interesting characters who aid you on your quest through an incredibly deep and hellish dungeon. Bear in mind before you purchase the game that you are playing a dungeon crawler from the mid-90’s. In many ways it feels like it. The pacing can be annoying at times, and some of the audio for the dialogue might cause your frontal lobe to atrophy. There are some options you can tweak to diminish some of the annoyances, but in the end, playing this game today feels like you’re playing a bit of an artifact. Regardless of aged features or minor camp or the year this game was made, it is again one of the greatest dungeon crawler, hack and slash games you’ll ever play. If you can’t see past the forgivable flaws then you’re missing out on a wonderful gaming experience.

If you enjoy taking an afternoon stroll through dark cold chambers filled with vile creatures and social desolation, this is the world for you. Experience endless pools of blood and gold as you hack your way through hundreds of demons. Be wary though, as you may soon find yourself the one being hacked down in a gory mess should you falter. Stock your potions, sharpen your sword and arrows, loosen the ties on your scrolls and prepare to delve in to hell.

There’s a lot of waxing poetic out there about Diablo II, and rightly so, but the first Diablo will always be my favorite. It’s much closer to a true roguelike than any of its successors, has a better atmosphere, a fair difficulty curve, and enough randomness that encouraged creative solutions to hard monsters instead of trying to min/max your build through shared inventory and loot runs. Plus… there’s no grinding! What an idea…! By not allowing monsters and treasure to respawn, you have to make do with the loot and experience that drops that game. I loved going through the game that first time, not getting great swords or shields, then having an awesome two handed axe drop and then use that to one-shot most of everything for the catacomb levels. The atmosphere and feel of the game wasn’t surpassed by its sequel either, in my opinion. That feeling of dread when you stumble into the Butcher’s room unprepared, or the first time you play the Halls of the Blind… this part is my nostalgia talking, but even the music and ambient sound design were perfection. Not to mention that the different monsters actually had true different weaknesses/immunities (not just slightly increased resistances) and behavior that lent them personalities of sorts. You usually treat a gaggle of death knights far differently than those acid spitters… there’s much less “I’ll just whirlwind my way through every single monster because it doesn’t matter” here. I’m almost a little sad that Diablo II was so popular and essentially became the template for all future ARPG’s to follow. The first Diablo has so much more soul to it; I feel like its formula has been largely forgotten. I'm so happy that Blizzard and GOG were able to make this happen.
