Explore, fight, talk and hack your way through a rich cyberpunk world in this 2D action-RPG!
Wanted dead by a mysterious and far-reaching organization, you will traverse the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and make unexpected allies on your quest to bring down the system! In this cyberpunk adventure inspired by Blade Runner and Neuromancer, you are free to choose your playstyle: will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, a diplomat or a straightforward gunfighter?
Designed as a throwback to earlier 2D platforming and action games combined with modern RPG elements, Dex offers real-time combat, a mature storyline and interactive dialogues.
Customize your character’s skills, equipment and even augmentations – implants which grant you superhuman abilities and open up new paths within the game’s open world.
A revolutionary hacking mechanic also lets you dive into Cyberspace: overcome viruses and intrusion countermeasures to deactivate turrets, overload devices, steal corporate data and cripple your enemies!
Rare blend of realism and creative vision: Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions combined with hand-drawn characters, animations, and environments, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
Multiple paths: Operate in physical reality or in Cyberspace. Overcome obstacles using your skills, weapons, augmentations…
Meaningful character building: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants…
Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality.
Rich game world and diverse level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task.
Three special outfits: The Samio Cyberwear allows you to regenerate your Focus when hacking, the Euroforce BattleRig offers physical protection against bullets, and the Armagear InvisiSuit can make you invisible! You’ll have to be on the lookout for clues about their location, and face serious opposition before earning them!
An epic game that I throughly enjoyed playing. Please sir can I have some more?!?
+ Really good looking game. Each part of the map has it's own distinct art style and music.
+ Soundtrack is brilliant.
+ Voice acting is very good for an indie game.
+ Side quests are not all fetch quests. Some quests have multiple ways to complete. Shealth, all in guns blazing/ fists flying or talking it out.
+ Great explorability.
+ Good combat once you level up and know what you are doing.
+ Character development is well paced and generally makes you feel like you are accomplishing something.
- Can take a while to figure out the mechanics of the game.
- Ending seemed a little rushed.
The platforming is a mess. It is sometimes difficult to tell what is the foreground and background and then there is fall damage (unless you get a secret upgrade). Thankfully platforming is not a huge part of the game.
Combat is simple and comes in melee or ranged mode. Honestly I have no idea why ranged exists as when you move in melee your enemies can't shoot you and you can block damage more easily while in ranged mode the enemy can just shoot you while you shoot them. You can also switch to hacking mode and hack enemy's brains to stun them which is insanely broken because then you can insta-kill most enemies. Not getting this upgrade will make your game 10x harder.
The story is interesting, but it ultimately kinda disappoints. It builds momentum only to stop dead for quite a while, then it picks up again only to end in something that feels very rushed and disappointing.
It's fully voiced which is a plus. Some voice acting is bad and hard to hear which immediately negates the plus . Tony's voice lines are cool though.
The dialogue is a hit and miss. Some lines are well written, while some absolutely make no sense. The main character, Dex, does not seem to have a clear personality and some voice lines in some cutscense absolutely break what little character she had.
Persuasion skill design sucks so bad. It only allows you to try and persuade the NPC by selecting 1 out of several options in hopes what you have in mind is what the writer had in mind. If it doesn't match, too bad, your persuasion will fail and you can only reload to try again.
Enemies are just clones of each other, fitting into two categories, either melee or ranged. You will approach most enemies the same.
Hacking is a chore and takes the form of a poorly designed SHMUP
If the story was not botched at the end, I would have perhaps even give it a borderline recommendation.
I got Dex free from GoG. I never installed it until recently. A really great side scrolling action game. I wish the developers made more similar games.
Had this game for a few years now, thought it was about time I left a review.
A side scrolling light RPG with lots of that oh-so-good Cyberpunk charm. The controls become intuitive very quickly and the combat is pretty simple but satisfying. I love exploring the areas, I enjoyed the dialogue and the refreshingly straightforward story is executed very well.
There is absolutely NO reason not to try this one. At it's full price, it's still a good investment and definitely worth your time checking out if you're a fan of side scrollers or cyberpunk in general.
Basically a deus ex like game in 2D. None of the games mechanics are revolutionary, neither is the storyline. If you are okay with playing a copy cat then go with it. I definitely enjoyed finishing it!
@Linux Users: Please be aware that the difficulty of black hole traps in cyberspace depends on you machine's performance. It's nearly impossible to avoid them on slower machines and thus makes some things inaccessible. Even though it was very annoying I was able to finish the game.
