GOG.com!
The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control.
Key Features:
Real role-playing from an immersive 3D, first-person perspective. The game includes action, character interaction and problem solving.
Realistic, recognizable locations. Many of the locations are built from actual blueprints of real places set in a near future scenario.
A game filled with people rather than monsters. This creates empathy with the game characters and enhances the realism of the game world.
Rich character development systems: Skills, augmentations, weapon and item selections and multiple solutions to problems ensure that no two players will end the game with similar characters.
Multiple solutions to problems and character development choices ensure a varied game experience. Talk, fight or use skills to get past obstacles as the game adapts itself to your style of play.
Strong storyline: Built on "real" conspiracy theories, current events and expected advancements in technology. If it's in the game, someone, somewhere believes

I have played this game all up to hardcore; knew every corner, dialogue, mod etc.
The option of getting to choose your destiny was new at that time. Stepping off the good or evil plans, you can be what you want to be. In addition to beeing free in my options of lifestyle, i can also choose if i prefer stealth, big bombs, the tech option or be the fast killer.
From my experience not all 4 options are as hard, but exploring multiple ways of reaching your goal (even in the first level) is awesome. Your dialogue also refers to your choices....
This is most definitly money well spent!
Many games claim to have many paths to choose from, but Deus Ex is one of the few to actually achieve this.
Everything in this game is absolutely polished: the music, the graphics (which haven't aged that much), the atmosphere and the story all match perfectly in this unique experience that is Deus Ex.
It blends RPG and FPS with mastery. With the many skills available, you can really be the character you want: a vicious killer - shooting and blowing up everything; a skilled marksman, killing from afar; an unstoppable hacker, using the enemies defenses against themselves; a stealthy ghost...
And it definitely rewards exploration, whether by giving you the passcode to a locked storage room, or by allowing you to bypass a room full of guards with a hidden vent.
I remember having a blast replaying the first mission over and over again, spending a long time in the UNATCO building and each time trying a different approach to finish the mission. And there was literally no limit to the new ways I could find. Using E.M.P grenades to disable robots, hacking the system and making them attack the enemy, using non-lethal weapons, going around the building and finding a hidden entrance... There's no limit to what you could do and how much fun you can have with this game.
You can replay the game as an entirely different character and have a completely different and fun experience. It can't be recommended enough.
A well-written story provides many hours of entertainment while investigating the mystery. Players can choose their approach to solving the game's many challenging scenarios, and even change the course of the story with decisions that affect its progress.
The best singleplayer game of all time.
Among the good dialogs, story and the augmentation modules the game is just a masterpiece as a whole.
The graphic is still adequate today, because its enough to create the dark, secret atmosphere of Deus Ex. The graphic is never distracting you and keeps sharp edges of the objects(newer graphic is often blurry or looks more like on the console, i dont like)
Big Areas without loading screen. And even the loading takes only 1second, so saving and loading becomes likeable and needed for the dangerous situations of the agent.
Hidden rooms, books or public terminals everywwhere are contributing to the atmosphere. The game looks completed. (not like gothic3 for example, where many areas never got filled with content)
Whoever wants to know how a world feels like, where terrorism and governmental surveillance are on the top priority list: Play Deus Ex
Really a Good Old Game (best game :))
It's all been said in the other reviews, but let me just add that if you haven't had the Deus Ex experience yet, you ARE missing out.
Yes, the graphics are dated and some elements of the user interface leave a bit to be desired, and the same could be said of the damage modeling.
However, small hiccups aside, this is still - by far - the most memorable journey I've ever taken from within the construct of a game.
DX received some criticism for being a "jack of all trades", a little RPG, a little Shooter, a little Graphic-Novel-esque...
But what the game does so well, is it lets you uncover the game's story - the conspiracy - for yourself, first-hand, with whatever means suit your style. (And as a side note, the story itself is actually built on existing real-world conspiracies, both alleged and in a few cases, partially confirmed).
This is a hugely ambitious game that actually pulls it off, and in every area that matters - over-delivers on its promises. It has since become the measuring stick for all games that attempt to follow in similar style, including the sequels. To date, nothing has come close to creating the sense of immersion and player-driven discovery of a virtual world, inside an action/adventure game.
Deus Ex is ironically named. The writing mechanism ("deus ex machina") is a plot device where a crisis or problem is solved through the sudden appearance of a far-fetched solution that essentially just drops out of the sky - and usually just in the nick of time. It's a tactic used by lazy writers everywhere.
Fortunately, Deus Ex (the game) takes no such shortcuts. The plot, and the unraveling of the conspiracy, is completely fleshed out, and vastly comprehensive to the player who is willing to explore DX's virtual world in depth.
And so there you have it. My take on why Deus Ex is currently, and likely will be for a very long time - the most unforgettable gaming experience I've ever had.
Buy it, play it. You'll thank me later.
