This game is simply amazing. It greatly improves on the old formula and brings this genre to the modern era with a bang. I am completely consumed by this game and have been enjoying every minute. I'm very glad Mimimi made this game as they proved themselves a lot with Shadow Tactics. It's too bad they aren't the ones who did the Commandos HD remaster!
Desperados 3 is the next tactical stealth game from the Shadow Tactics developer Mimimi Games. While D3 is still a great game with many improvements from ST, overall, I find ST more enjoyable.
Pros
- The stealth gameplay is like solving puzzles and you need to be clever and creative in order to get through the game.
- D3 has some QoL upgrades that make the game more convenient to play than ST. Characters will now automatically climb (ladders, vines, etc.) to reach destinations. Fast forward is also a nice feature.
- There are more levels and more ways to play than ST. Being able to play all characters in all maps is a very nice addition.
- Isabelle's abilities are unique and magical in nature. She can do some interesting things very different from what was possible in ST.
Cons
- The wild west setting isn't as immersive for a stealth game as ST's ninja setting.
- D3 characters are not as enjoyable as ST characters. Aside from Isabelle, all other characters are just weaker imitations from ST. Guns have bigger detection radius than shooting range, which limit their use. AOE options are limited and all require ammo (no more melee AOE takedowns like ST's Mugen). Kate (D3's version of Aiko) does not have melee kills.
- Starting with chapter 2, almost all enemies have multiple other enemies that are looking at them, and it takes time to come up with a solution. This can drag things down and make the game a bit repetitive. It would have been better if the game had a good mix of simple enemy placements and complicated enemy placements throughout the level.
- While graphically superior to ST, levels aren't appealing since majority of textures are just variations of ugly brown.
More action and more polish than Shadow Tactics. Story is great and it pushes the gameplay further, similarly to Shadow Tactics. What I like the most are new types of skills, resulting in many interesting outcomes.
