it took years, but i eventually forgot how hilariously fun this game is. it's a rather tragic event that it happened it all, really, but all is well now. descent 3 is still just as engaging and immersive as it has always been, and now that i've bought a few decent control surfaces (and honestly, i really prefer dual analog, playstation-style controls for this) it's far more immersive. it's true; the plot is cheesy and ignorable, the visuals are more than a hint dated, and the "outdoor" portions of the game are regularly minimal and have an extremely low ceiling. who cares? if you enjoy flying around in corridors and blowing up robots, it's all right here.
The Descent series is one of the greatest in gaming history, none before or since have ever managed to pull off an all directions anti gravity game such as this one.
You will get lost, you will go fast and you will love it. Its the ultimate form of Vertigo.
With fast paced action, a myriad of power'ups and more monsters to your hearts content. You will never tire of this game.
The later stages are however exceedingly difficult and you may need to practice quite a bit.
This is a must have in any true gamers collection, and at the same time, ensure you get Descent I & II and play those thoroughly.
When i was in the 2nd grade i first saw the game descent. When i got descent 3 one year for christmas it became and instant fav. This re-defined shooters for me. After playing other like duke nukem and halo and going back to descent, descent can STILL give a better game time then any other the other FPS games out there.
the descent games are awesome. there is still a group of us that play for fun and events. descentrangers.com if interested please go to the site and shoot us a email.
Descent 3 is a unique entry in the series, attempting with much effort to shake up the old game formula by introducing new twists to each level in order to turn the third installment of the series into something more than just a maze with keys to be found and enemy bots to be shot to pieces.
There's a bit of a story going on in an attempt of tying together the different labyrinths.
Graphics, though impressive at the time, are kind of nice to look at, but, as to be expected, considerably less impressive now. The places this game is taking place in are wonderful: From sewers to more sewers and caves to city streets, subway train systems, mines, space stations and even a very large spaceship. I especially like the addition of large-ish outdoor areas.
The twists they tried to apply to each level is unfortunately what makes this game feel increasingly tedious. It feels like there's always one extra loop for you to jump (fly) through and I feel it doesn't do the game much good. I'd often find myself wandering around the ever same areas FOR HOURS, looking for a clue on how to progress. That's because it's often not entirely clear what the designers had in mind for you to do in order to progress. And that is the big downside of this game, in my opinion.
Descent 3 is still a game that is nice to look at imo. It has a great atmosphere and beautiful environments which are nicely varied. They really did try to offer the player more than just flying through mineshafts this - and it shows. Unfortunately the puzzles are not always implemented all that well, which is getting tedious and frustrating.
I haven't even yet started playing the addon, but the feeling I had with the main game is that it somewhat overstays its welcome. You will get A LOT of descent 3 for your money. And it's probably a lot of fun in coop or DM multiplayer, if you can find someone.
Personally, I'd recommend D1 or D2 - or even Overload instead. This one's more or less for nostalgia's sake only.
