Descent

It's an amazing game - I first played it when I was around 13 years old, I had a warrant officer in the RAF for a step-father at the time and he kitted his PC out with a badass flightstick and had a nice PC to run the game on with a big monitor. At the time the graphics were state-of-the-art, they aged ok and wont bother you much. What you should be paying attention to is the rare full-3d movement FPS action that you get to experience in the game. The overall idea of the game is to find hostages, then using keys get through the colour-coded doors that lead you deeper into each mine/space station - until you find the reactor. (you'll want to find the emergency exit first) You then have to destroy the reactor - which is guarded by an ever more sophisticated defensive matrix, and when you do you get about a minute to escape the mine through the aformentioned and often difficultly placed emergency exit. Descent is a challenge when you sink your teeth into it, finding and upgrading all your weapons, and defeating some of the tougher mobile-reactor enemies late into the game will have you tearing your hair out or simply floating around outside their room waiting in fear as you listen to the thumping sound they make before they blow you to pieces.

Descent was and still very fun. Both 1 and 2. You are trapped in strange places with your ship, full of powerful robotics trying to kill you. Descent makes you try to survive in closed places, with a FULL 3D gameplay. It's so immersive that is hard to explain. Forget your problems, enter in your ship and prepare to face hell.

I just love it. Absolutely love it. The graphics are great. Sure, those around today might be really developed and all, but those of Descent I and II compare. From projectiles to lighting to explosions, textures and other things, everything just fits... like a puzzle, one might say. Sounds are equally great. Descent's soundtrack never seems to get old. Descent II's soundtrack, specifically, is phenomenal. I'm referring to the midi, not the redbook, but that's also great stuff. Gameplay in single-player is great! Lots of challenging mine layouts, robots with unique strengths and weaknesses... really. I haven't had the privilege of playing multi-player, but from video montages I've viewed online, it looks intense. It's undoubtedly fun to watch, if not play. The whole movement deal with Descent is awesome. Hands down. It's challenging, enthralling, and oh-so-fun! It gave a friend of mine motion-sickness 'n' vertigo 'n' stuff. How cool is that, huh? Gameplay's quite balanced. Everything has a strength or strengths, everything has a weakness or weaknesses. The game's easy to learn and difficult to master. Overall, it's awesome, unique, fun and just about every other compliment I could give it. I just wish, for sake of clarity and whatnot, that they'd both be redone exactly as they are, but with today's graphics and such. Imagine that! Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg, and I'm fairly certain I'd forgotten to mention some things... but don't settle for reviews. I just saw these games here and will buy them when I get home from work. I used to belong to a Clan that fought other clans in multi-player mode. It was so much fun, Love the Proximity mines in D2, they are my favorite. I used to plant them next to a door on the other side while being chased by the enemy. BOOM! bye bye. I cant wait to play again. I just hope there are still other players online. I cant remember what service I used. Does anyone know?

Descent was the first game to truly creep me out with the uncanny AI of the enemy robots. The storyline of the game was equally unnerving - being sent to remote mining colonies to hunt down mining robots gone rogue. One of my all-time favs.
