I purchased this last night and played 3 games so far. Really short games, packed with fun stuff. Really simple controls and mechanics, you can hit stuff, pick up stuff, throw stuff and swap between 3 active weapons.
The game is challenging but not right off the bat, it has a very nice difficulty progression, so you will have some time to master it before it gets too hard. The music is cheerful and it's a nice addition to the goofy style of the sprites.
Combat is quite rudimentary, you can hit with melee weapons and shoot stuff. The zombies explode and lose parts in a very detailed way when hit. So you can see them spit a bunch of teeth when you hit them with a golf club, or their guts which is really nice.
The travelling parts are as fun as the zombie-skull-crushing parts, you watch as your characters interact with each other in different ways and there are a lot of varied events that can happen, like finding other survivors, dogs, cars, bandits and hordes of zombies. Your characters personalities and traits will show up during these events, in different interactions, sometimes they will argue or have different ideas. You'll end up getting attached to your characters since they are so distinct.
Things that would make the game better:
- 4 player support (the developer promises to bring this on a future update)
- A post-travel log, I wish my adventures weren't so ephemeral, I wish I could save up stories of the travels, or at least a hall of fame with my best survivors, their traits and perhaps how they died.
My verdict: A very fun roguelike game to play both with friends or solo with tons of content and replay value. Recommended for people with a sense of humour which like absurdity and zombie movies that don't take themselves too serious.
