I recieved this game for free, nevertheless I felt dissapointed by it. The controls are clunky and the voice acting very mediocre. I frequently felt like it didn't react properly to my inputs, everything feels delayed. It is pretty, but dated. The story so far after an hour and a half has been utterly unengaging and I simply got bored of it.
...but I still enjoyed playing Deadlight, it's got good writing and characters, responsive controls and a world with an atmospheric sense of dread. It's a 2.5D survival game where you're tasked with shooting zombies and staying alive long enough to find out what happened to your loved ones. Simple enough right.
But let's cut to the chase, as most other reviews have mentioned, this game is about 3-5 hours long. You will know already if this passes your own personal judgement on value. For me, it's worth a punt when it's discounted, but stay clear when it's anywhere near full price.
Kaspersky detects "TrojanWin32.Reconyc.hvxj". As by the last commends, this issue seems to exist since some weeks, but unfortunately I have found no reaction from GOG side. :(
I'm not really a big fan of platform games, but I found this surprisingly enjoyable. At least for a while. It's pretty atmospheric, and the overall look, sound effects, and music combine together to make for a genuinely bleak and gloomy experience that really sells the post-apocalyptic storyline and makes you feel more engaged. Far more so than in games such as Left4Dead. Which pretty much just move you from jump scare to jump scare by means of a hoard of monsters.
It's also refreshing that this game give you plenty of options to avoid your enemies or to trap them, rather than just being a hack and slash ghoul slaying adventure where your main aim in the game is simply to pick up an increasingly powerful set of weapons to blast an increasingly large hoard of enemies.
So far, so good. If you're into survival horror and platforms then this is a fun game.
But for me the novelty wore off quite quickly and I soon found myself simply running and jumping through levels, and calling zombies into traps. The game still looks and plays beautifully , but the environments got stale and didn't hold my attention for long. I also found it frustrating that most of the scenery was little more than a matte background that couldn't be interacted with.
If you're into this type of game then it's probably going to be enjoyable, if not, you might get bored quickly.
Some people say that it's too short. I got bored before finishing it so I can't comment on that.
Deadlight had a lot of potential but fell short mostly due to technical issues. Clunky animations and a lot bugs including game breaking ones. And this is in Director's cut version published 4 years after initial release. Cutscenes are fine, but the plot itself is terrible, full of deus ex machina and situations that just do not make any sense. Visuals are good, backgrounds are even great. Action felt really satisfying from time to time despite poor animation.
