Story

In the distant reaches of space, a war for the fate of humanity is being waged. We learned early that traditional weapons were useless against this extraterrestrial threat, and in our darkest hour we found a savior that could push these monsters back... girls with magical powers!

These soldiers bravely head to the front lines to defend Earth from the vermin who seek to exterminate the human race! By transplanting alien tissue into their bodies, our heroes are able to achieve superhuman abilities. This stolen power manifests itself differently in each individual, allowing our defenders to specialize in roles that optimize their natural abilities. However, this new power by itself will not win our liberation. The strength of the alien invaders push our magical troops to the limit with every battle, and survival is not guaranteed.

With the bodies of your allies strewn at your feet and the maw of an unimaginable horror at your throat, will you falter? Or will you find the strength to stand and fight?

A Fantastic Thought Provoking VN

After reading the description of this Visual Novel (VN), your first impression might be "This looks like Madoka Magica in space. With aliens instead of witches." It is reasonable to have that impression. On the surface, this VN does look like another story about Magical Girls fighting against an inhuman enemy force that threatens to drive humanity to extinction. That is only the surface of this VN however, it has a lot more underneath its layers. Basically, this is a story unlike many VNs you may be familiar with. You play from the PoV of a female protagonist named Minori Iizuka. This is Minori's story about how she becomes a magical girl and how she learns about and perserveres through the corruption of the Cathedral that's meant to be a home in the isolation of space in the war against the aliens. Overall: (9/10) This is a grim story. Dead End Aegis is comfortable using dark elements to tell a meaningful story that will stick with you and really make you think. There is a ton of rape and emotional abuse throughout the game, and it is there to make the player feel for the situation. It isn't just there for the sake of shock value, or satisfying fetishes a person may have. Underneath the rape, this game conveys a lot of compelling themes to think about. From the nature of capitalism, politics, what "being human" means, and how far humans are willing to go to survive. This game is a story first and eroge second. The eroge elements are used to supplement the story which is the main element The main characters have been fleshed out spectacularly. While I think some work could have been used on other characters not part of the main cast, I believe I understand what purpose the story was trying to achieve with the roles of these characters. If you are fine with such content, you will have an enjoyable time reading this story. It is one of the best Visual Novels I've read in recent time. I definitely do recommend this Visual Novel to you.

Came for sexy time, found abject horror

I never thought I would review an H-game, but here we are. If anything, I just want to throw out a warning for anyone foolish enough (like me) to disregard the other reviews that stated this game is dark and reiterate, this game is DARK. It's a game that succeeds in making the player less horny, as any good game of it's ilk should do. I played the game and am no longer horny. In fact, I'm the polar opposite of horny. I may even take up a life of chastity. Why you ask? Because it does it in all the wrong ways. Because this isn't really a porn game in the traditional sense, it's a severely messed up psychological horror show disguised as a porn game. The words 'fun' and 'sexy' have no place anywhere near this game, the best I can reason is that's is not the point. Which raises the question of what exactly this game's point is, other than making the player question their life choices as the end after paying for it. I'm going to devote the rest of my days to petting kittens and other gentle things to forget the atrocities this game has committed against my psyche. I can only seeing it coming full circle when someday my future kids or S.O. see this on my GOG Galaxy account and decide to have me rendered down for the protein-based nutrient supplements popular in the future. The extra star is because it was a relatively bug-free experience.

I was not prepared for this...

To begin with, keep in mind that I just Have 1h30 playtime, this is NOT what you can call a "real" review but I've just got to let it out. I've seen some messed up thing since I began playing video games : mutilation, evisceration, cremation and so on... but I really wasn't ready. At first, the game seemed nice, art is good and colorful, VAs are talented, sound design is nice, characters seem well built and the world building makes you want to know more. And then there was THAT scene. As I said, I've seen things that hardened me to the point where visual gore don't leave much of an effect to me but this game goes way beyond that. Images can shock you even if you've ever seen some weird H-scene but with the sound, the actress ( I don't want to know what happened at the studio this day ^^) and those descriptions so clinically detailed, this was truly a disturbing experience. And it doesn't stop quickly but I won't spoil much further. So why 5 stars if I was this disgusted? Because despite of the disgust and a little nausea, I just WANT to know more, I want to see what the characters can do in this world, what bonds they create and how far they go. Now, you're warned (but problably still not ready :D). If you like what seems to be a well written and dark story with intesrestiond characters, you can get it without a second thought. Just remember not to eat while playing. You're welcome.

A surprising gem

so i bought this on jasts site and finally finished 1 of the routes and i will say the story kept me engaged from start to finish. Around the mid way point the mystery of what is happening starts to unravel and it gets better and better from that point. this is not the darkest vn up there from what ive played but it certainly is a dark story. the sex scenes are all well done and if you have a surround sound set up some of the scenes will work with it. the characters for the most part are likable save for minori in the start of the story. i absolutely hated her at the start but started to warm up to her about 6 hours in. the supporting cast are well fleshed out and not just token girl b and girl c. overall i would say for 30 bucks your getting a good 17 to 20 hr story for just one of the routes.
