Wow. I've played over 3000 games in my lifetime (Commodore 64, Amiga, Nintendo, Atari, Intellivision, etc), and I must say this is one of THE most refined, smooth, playable, dynamic, and scalable "RogueVania" style games ever.
I've been playing for months and it never gets tiring. It always feels like a new game every time.
This game needs to make up its mind. While it is a roguelite it also tries to be a metroidvania and speed runner at the same time, these are two diametrically opposed game styles. The later being a fast paced, jump and dodge, whoa close one style affair, while the former is a slower, look before you leap, block then counter experience. There are timed doors that force you to speed through each level to reach them and collect the rewards within, items you need to collect such as cells for unlocking new weapons/skills and scrolls that boots your stats and buff your max health. But if you do that you will miss out on all the loot hidden in the levels, such as secret room with unique weapons/skills, sweet easter eggs that are subject to rng, and better weapons to replace your under level garbage from the previous level. Stun locking is also a problem a single hit locks you into a flinch animation that leaves you open to further attacks, now combine that with enemies that hit you through walls, spawn mini mobs that swarm you, or just flat out stop you from escaping( Hello golem you op piece of ...) and you are gonna have a bad time. Further more the daily challenge is garbage, pick from two random weapons and hope they don't suck. Now hurry to the boss and skip all the loot and upgrades along the way because you don't want to run out of time do you? But you will anyway as the boss is a tougher version of the one in the base game. Skip this till they rebalance it, especially with the insane amount of grinding required to unlock anything.
When I heard that this was going to be a roguelite game, I thought to myself "Oh no". But I was so impressed with the visuals and so starved for a good Metroidvania that I went ahead and bought it anyway.
About 15 hours of playtime later, I feel like I've barely progressed or seen much of the game. Duh. That's what roguelites do. Time sinks that make you play the same tiny thing for hundreds of hours until you get "good enough". Whatever that means. Because it's not like you get similarly skilled like in games such as maybe... Raiden. Or Rockband. Or anything else that actually relies purely on skill, instead of grinding for upgrades and luck.
So for me personally, this game is a total desaster and I didn't enjoy myself. But I recognize the finesse, the polish and the fact that it is obviously enjoyable for many people. Hence, my middle of the line rating for it.
I usually dont care for roguelites...there is no sense of progression at all and I get bored after a few minutes...i got hooked on dead cells in first minute. Its challenging yet immediately after you start you feel like a bad***. Every run you get closer to unlocking permanent upgrades so you always feel like progressing hence solving my problem with roguelites
+ incredibly smooth controls, fun combat, movement feels great
+ visually beautiful even if i usually cant stand pixel art
+ music
+ enemy variety
+ level design, although its random generated its fun and easy to navigate
+ easy to pick up and play
+ challenging but very fair
-/ story/lore not interesting at all but I like how lighthearted it is
- it will get repetitive eventually
Overall 9/10 as close to 10 as I can give it

This is one of the best rouge-like games
However, as of November 30, 2021, the latest version.
The dead cells sold by GOG still do not support the mod API and cannot use mods.
The developers don't seem to care if GOG platform users can have a full gaming experience.
The only good thing is that there is no DRM limitation.
