Great game, not for the faint of heart

This game is great. Combat is fast-paced and feels fun, the pixel art style is gorgeous and the lore is interesting and mysterious. The progression system of gathering cells in a stage and handing them in when you beat that stage works well, with the constant threat of losing them all when you die. However, before you buy this, you should know what you're getting into: this game is hard. Like, really hard. The first few stages will become very easy after a few times, but the later stages and bosses are tough and whenever you die, you restart at the very beginning and only keep the upgrades you unlocked (Roguelite!) The point is: if you want to play through the full game you'll need to put in a lot of time to learn the enemy movements and stages. If you don't have that time, or you aren't very good at difficult games, I recommend looking past this one.

Addictive, unforgiving and fun

I've had a lot of fun with this game since I picked it up. There's a feeling of constant discovery and slow progress. Dying is part of that progress. Items are plentiful but doled out sparingly. You won't see everything this game has to offer in the first couple playthroughs, like I've seen with other games. New enemies in new areas are on a steep difficulty curve and that's OK with me. You con't just slash your way through this game. Yeah, you'll actually have to take your time now and again. I'm impressed with the look and feel of the game. They've really captured the Castlevania look, from the level design to the monsters to the decorations in the background. Everything moves smoothly, combat is fast but playable. You can even manage to escape, sometimes, if you've bitten off more than you can chew. Weapons and items are different enough to make some choices difficult but yo ucan tailor your loadout to your style of play. I've gotten pretty good at dodging and blocking enemy attacks, something I rarely do in other games. Overall I'm happy with this game, but man has it taken a lot of free time from me.

Unique take on rogue-lite genre

TL;DR Dead Cells is best rogue-lite I've played since Risk or Rain I always had a soft spot for rogue-type games, ever since playing the original and of course ADOM in late 90s. Since then, I played quite a few titles, but over time I started to drift more towards more accessible rogue-lites. They are usually less complex, shorter and more action-based. Dead Cells is the newest iteration of the genre and dare I say, it is everything I thought Rogue Legacy would be. You start out as a green amorphous blob possessing a cadaver of a fallen warrior. Armed with very basic, rusted weapons and a new pair of legs you wander out to explore this huge towering castle and it's outskirts. It is of course filled with vicious (and beautifully animated) enemies each with unique behavior which you will have to learn by heart if you want to make any progress. Along the way there are treasures abound that will help you on your quest. From simple necessities like gold and valuable gems through multitude of ranged and melee weapons to traps, grenades and spells able to turn whole rooms of enemies into a satisfying bloodbath. However, most precious of them all are Cells, bright blue orbs that you can spend between stages for permanent upgrades that will give you an edge in your future runs, because you lose everything upon death. As is tradition. There is much to like in Dead Cells: the pixel-perfect controls, the zone randomization, useful teleporters, stuning enemies when bursting through a door, new abilities that open whole new zones and so on. There are of course few bugs and other things that could be ironed out. If there is anything that I would like to change it is music. It plays somewhere in the background and is barely noticeable. Dead Cells is still in early access but even in its current state it is well worth buying. Recommended.

Solid and promising roguelike

Awesome game. Definetly worth it's cost. Good gameplay and hero control. But difficulty is too hard after 5 level, and it can't be adjusted. Although it can be plus to game (roguelike indeed). But level random and poor variety of monsters of each level makes it a bit grindy. I feel there should be adjustments for players someone loves grind ok, got it. And for someone who dosen't figure out a new way to get upgrades. Game should be played for fun, not for grind :)

Action is an uderstatement!

I have absolutely zero passion fore roguelikes. Could never play one for more then an hour at best. This said I couldn't let this game down. It's action packed but that is just the stage for the absolutely seemless combat experience. The combat in this game might just be the most fluid I ever played. 5/5 for the engaging combat, graphics and weapon diversity. 6/5 for native linux support
