A game that deserves a remaster it unfortunalty will most likely never get one much like Dark Colony but it is still fun to go back and play a game that made giving orders to troops one of the best parts of the game.
I may have gotten this for free as a sale bonus, but I still feel like I want my money back. GoG is still great, but don't bother with this/these games.
I admit, I didn't go far in the campaigns, but that is because of how messed up the game is. Now, I can deal with minor resolution issues or even lagg. Unfortunately there are no minor issues to report, just:
~This game didn't load up with rainbow screen messed up graphics every single time, but at least more than half the times.
~You cannot affect game speed, which is FAR too fast, especially since troops do not automatically retaliate against enemies attacking them.(I tried repeatedly stationing numbers of different types of units in the enemy base, they would attack buildings and let themselves be shot to death). This makes harvesting/building a bit faster but will destroy you in battle.
~The tutorial was an odd mix of insulting and impossible to hear. Literally, looping constantly calling me a dumbass for not doing the objective he just demanded-which at least told me what to do, unlike the extremely loud music and quieter objective voices which are for some reason BOTH controlled by the music volume slider, I could only hear blaring soundtrack and some background talking before(or quieter music with meaningless mumbling). Not Fun. But it's just a simple RTS setup anyway, tutorial barely seems required so this isn't a killing loss.
~The first time I quit this game from frustration(hadn't tried running expansion yet) it somehow killed my taskbar+start menu, fucking up my windows session completely and forcing me to kill the power and restart. Never had that happen before.(today)
The graphics problem wasn't every single time(at least with base game) so that isn't enough to stop me, and the hardly intelligible tutorial at least gave enough freedom(whilst insulting your intelligence) to let you see that it's just a basic RTS setup. If graphics ran properly I'd give 1.5 stars. If the speed issue was fixed: 2.5?
At first this game is kinda fun, you can collect resources and build units and attack. The enemy is constanly harassing you but you can defend ok.
Once you get to the later missions, though... you have missions where you start out with almost no resources, and Water is the only one you need for money. (The green resource is ONLY used to increase the power coming from your generators and nothing else... ) Unfortunely, they put the water far away from your base, AND you have to find it first... very dumb mechanic. All while the enemy starts out with fully fledged bases and units all over the map with resources to gather (usually from 2 or more Water spots). Mission 9 is a clear example (Freedom Gaurd), where I just stopped playing.
Fortunately, there's a "cheat" where you can find the file "SHELLCFG.H" in ".../Dark Reign/dark/shell" (Open up in Notepad) and change the number after "#define BTN_MISSION_COEFFICIENT" from 150 to 157... and you can skip these stupid missions.
The game doesn't save your mission progress. If you beat Mission 3, as an example, and come back to the game, the game will start you off at Mission 1 again. The only way to get around this is with a save file, and save right before you beat the mission. Dumb. (Or us the cheat mentioned earlier (which is why I use it).
All in all, got it on sale, played the missions that were fun, and skipped the bad ones.
Final note, every unit in this game is very squishy (they all die in 5 hits or less)... the best bet is to build a bunch of cheap units and swarm the enemy in numbers... especially at first.
