Not bad if you like 90s FMV horror

D is an interactive puzzle horror story and for the time period it came out in the graphics were quite impressive. I remember playing it in the mid-90s and being blown away that I was able to walk around a 3D environment. For starters the story is not bad, it’s cheesy horror so I liked it. The 3D FMV sequences used are also pretty fitting and I feel they add a bit to the tone of the game. Since the story is based on a 2-hour time limit, the game is short, took me about 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete. Puzzle were for the most part fun but not complex. I do have one major gripe, the section mid-way through the game, the rotating room felt more like filler to extend the game then actually adding to it, most of my time was spend in that section… rotating a room. That is my only complaint really. Aside from the rotating room, the game is definitely worth a play if you like early 3D rendered FMV games. I don’t have as much time anymore to play so a short game like D that you can finish in a sitting really fit the bill for me. It might not have a huge replay ability but I’m sure I’ll play it again every few years for the nostalgia.

This is not a game for newcomers

First and foremost: If you didn't play and enjoy this game back when it came out, it is not worth picking up now. It's ugly, the sound design is terrible, it's boring, and the plot is utterly stupid. I'm sure it was groundbreaking when it was first released, but for a horror fan that is just discovering this game, it's not worth it. That plot twist was one of the dumbest I've ever encountered in any medium, ever. If you loved it back in the day, kudos. I only recently picked it up and I don't understand why anyone would ever want to play this game. That's about it.

2 hours but its the first of the series

Being a huge fan of D2, I had to see how it started off, having never played the first one before. Just like D2 this game is weird, the story is very captivating, the puzzles are so hard I don't know how you would beat it without a guide. And oh, yeah... you have to beat it in 2 HOURS. I really like the pace of the game because it gives you a break from some of the heavy button mashing fast paced games. The downside of this game is that you can't save it (which isn't too bad if the game isn't extremely long) But what kills me is the time limit. When I saw that you're out of time screen I was so pissed. I would have gave this game a better rating if it wasn't for the time limit, but I think it is still generous considering the game isn't a complete fail.

A flawed, charming game

D is not the kind of game that most people would want to play, especially today. It is (extremely) slow, there is little gameplay, and it is very short. But is it any good? Let's see... First, the graphics. I think that it looks quite good for a 1996 game. Today, it is ugly, but I think that it benefits the atmosphere of the game and ultimately makes the experience so much better. Now, the atmosphere and mood are the best aspects of D. While not a scary game by any means, the nature of the game is generally creepy and tense, if only a little bit. The sound is not great, but it does the job. The gameplay revolves around pressing a button and waiting for Laura (the protagonist) to move there or to do this or that. It is not fun at all - but D is not the kind of game that wants to be fun. It is a different kind of experience, and I believe that the limited, slow, generally boring gameplay helps to convey certain feelings and emotions that D needs so much. A note to other reviewers: not every game needs to be fun, you know? This is a different kind of game. It's not bad, it's just not for you. Now, there is one major gripe with D: the story. It is "decent" at best. I see that it wanted to be artistic, interesting, dark and moody, but it comes off as cheap and laughable. Despite this, I think that D is very much worth playing today if you are into movie-like games, FMV games or just old bizarre stuff. D is all of that and more.

D stands for "Don't bother"

D is the tale of one Laura Harris, whose father has gone crazy and started murdering people. It's up to her to defuse the situation before something even worse happens. Born from the twisted mind of Kenji Eno, D is one of the most famous games from the FMV era! Well, I say that, but the game doesn't really have the markings of a masterpiece or even a cult classic. I assume everybody knows about D because of three things: its first person FMV gameplay, Kenji Eno's name, and its time limit mechanic which only gives you 2 hours and no saves to finish the game. But in truth, as it's very short and the solutions are almost all blatantly obvious, that should be enough time for most players. I finished with 15 minutes to spare (even got the good ending!) and never had to check any guides. But there are two problems: Laura moves as slowly as a petrified snail, and some of the puzzles seem specifically designed to waste your time with long FMVs. These issues mean that the game is more likely to frustrate the player rather than making him feel more immersed. I could shake my head and wonder about how it's a shame that such an interesting premise and story got bogged down by questionable gameplay choices.... but let's face it, even the story is laughable. Without spoiling anything, let's say that the big reveal had me roll my eyes in a mixture of disbelief and laughter. For a horror game, that's probably not a good thing. There were several versions of the game, including PS1, Saturn and 3DO, but the PC version got stuck with low resolution, scanlined videos. And since the game is entirely videos, I don't have to tell you how much that sucks. Overall, perfectly skippable. If you want to experience Kenji Eno's weird ideas, you are better off picking up Enemy Zero, which is superior in every way. If you want a more interesting first person FMV game, Mansion of Hidden Souls for the Mega CD is a far more charming effort even with all its issues. No reason to return to D today.
